Elizabeth Leroy [Millie Perkins] is a young woman growing up in the 1950s United States who has devoted her life to serving God. Her faith has carried her through many hardships, including the loss of her mother to cancer, and the long shadow of a father who works as a doctor. She dreams of seeing the world beyond her small town, even though she remains closely tied to the community that shaped her. Though she has a childhood friend in Will Bishop [Bruce Weitz], she does not intend to settle down right away, valuing her independence and calling above personal risk. Her days are filled with service to others, quiet prayers, and a heart that questions what purpose her life might ultimately serve.
When a new assistant pastor arrives at town, Elizabeth is asked to pick him up at the train station and show him around. The man she meets is young and handsome, not the older figure she expected. The connection between Elizabeth and Peter White plays out with a surprising depth; they become engaged despite the odds and circumstances around them. Ben Phillips’s faith and sense of duty lead him to volunteer as a chaplain during the Korean War, a choice he makes with a quiet, resolute conviction. He believes God has called him to serve, and he promises to marry Elizabeth when he returns. At the station, he gives her a Bible inscribed with words that frame their hopes: > Though none go with me, yet will I follow. No turning back, no turning back. Elizabeth keeps his letters close, continuing to help others as she waits.
The loss of Elizabeth’s father soon leaves her with nothing but debt and a home likely to be foreclosed. The mortgage looms large, and the bank edges closer to taking possession. In a practical turn of fate, she moves in with Will Bishop. [Bruce Weitz] steps into this part of her life as a steadfast provider who offers her a secretarial job at his auto insurance company. The shift from idealism to real-world struggle tests Elizabeth in profound ways, and she leans on her growing circle of friends and neighbors for support.
A shocking knock on the door brings the news Elizabeth dreaded: Ben has died in the line of duty after a hospital airstrike, a blow that leaves her reeling. The days blur into a blur of grief, practical tasks, and a need to carry on. Time passes, and as she settles into her routine, she begins to see a different kind of love blooming with Will. Their bond deepens as he starts dating other people, and Elizabeth has to decide what she wants from life. When she finally resolves to move out and start anew, Will confesses his own love for her, and they marry in a later chapter of her long road.
Ben’s fate takes an unexpected turn when a letter arrives—he did not die after all. He writes to tell Elizabeth that he wasn’t killed and that he will be home soon. The revelation forces Elizabeth to confront a choice that could fracture the life she has built. She tells Ben that she has fallen in love with Will and that she has already chosen to stay by his side. When Ben returns, he and Elizabeth share a compassionate embrace, but she explains that she had believed him dead and chose to marry Will. He is crushed, yet asks to be kept informed of what happens in her life, a reminder of the complex loyalties that define this story.
Will and Elizabeth carve out a long, contented life together. They have a son who grows up and marries, and that union brings a daughter into the world, the family’s first granddaughter. Tragically, the couple who raised Elizabeth’s son perish in a car accident on their way home from a Christmas party, leaving their granddaughter in the care of Will and Elizabeth. The loss becomes a heavy weight that shakes Elizabeth’s faith; she questions why so many beloved people—her parents, her first love, her son—seemingly are taken away by an indifferent fate. Yet she endures, caring for the family she has built and continuing to contribute to the community she has long served.
The years pass, and Will ultimately succumbs to brain disease after more than four decades of marriage. A quiet, heartfelt party held by her dear friend Fran marks fifty years of Elizabeth’s service to the community. People at the gathering share stories about how she touched their lives, how she offered steadfast support, and how her faith gave others strength. The party ends with a notable return of one figure from Elizabeth’s past—a guest named Ben, whose presence hints at unresolved histories and the enduring pull of the choices she made long ago.
