A Rumor of Angels

In the midst of his overwhelming emotional struggles, twelve-year-old James (Trevor Morgan) grapples with the profound absence of his mother, who passed away two years earlier, leaving him haunted by a paralyzing fear. His father, Nathan (Ray Liotta), frequently absent due to work commitments, along with his stepmother Mary, remain largely unaware of the turmoil brewing within James, causing him to feel utterly isolated as he tries to navigate his grief.

One day, while engaging in a creative play behind the mysterious Maddy Bennet’s (Vanessa Redgrave) property, James accidentally damages her fence. Maddy, initially stern, soon recognizes the urgency of the moment and insists that James take responsibility for what he’s done. As their unlikely friendship begins to blossom, James learns that Maddy too has endured significant loss; she reveals to him her heartbreak over the death of her son Bobby, who lost his life in the Vietnam War back in 1974.

With every story Maddy shares, she gently encourages James to confront his painful memories regarding his mother’s passing, rekindling fears and questions that he has long repressed. Maddy confides in James about the solace she finds in the belief that Bobby is still communicating with her from the afterlife, a sentiment that resonates deeply within James as he yearns to reconnect with his own lost mother.

However, when James’s parents decide to prohibit him from visiting Maddy, expressing worries about her increasingly grim tales, he is utterly distraught over the loss of this newfound bond. It is not until Maddy suffers a heart attack and subsequently recovers—though only briefly—that James starts to find comfort in reconnecting with his own family. Notably, his father begins to engage in open conversations with him, allowing for a new form of communication. As Maddy eventually passes away, James experiences a profound realization: her death has birthed a new understanding and connection with the people around him, including his stepmother, echoing the lessons of love and loss that Maddy imparted to him during their time together.
