They Came to Play

The narrative unfolds as a tale recounted to a young couple by a mysterious stranger wandering through a field, with a view of a small British industrial city during the tumultuous times of WWII. The unnamed stranger, portrayed by J.B. Priestley, delivers his story as an allegory, exploring the potential for humanity to thrive in a utopian world post-war.

Within this thought-provoking tale, nine individuals from diverse backgrounds and societal classes find themselves drawn to an enigmatic, modern, castle-like structure under unknown circumstances. Among them are Sir George Gedney, a bitter aristocrat; Malcolm Stritton, an unhappy bank clerk longing for political change; his domineering wife Dorothy Stritton; Alice Foster, a discontented waitress; Mr. Cudworth, an avaricious businessman; the needy Lady Loxfield accompanied by her obedient daughter Philippa; the skeptical yet free-thinking seaman Joe Dinmore; and Mrs. Batley, a pragmatic charwoman.

As these nine characters engage with one another — often in disagreement — they eventually uncover that their castle offers a view of a city below. A door grants them access to this city, which remains unseen throughout the story. After their fleeting encounter with it, they return to the castle, where they engage in discussions about their experiences. For some, this city, with its implied socialist ideals, symbolizes a perfect society, while others find it an unappetizing prospect. As night approaches, each individual faces a crucial choice: to embrace the possibility of a new life in the city, relinquishing their former existence, or to depart and leave behind what they have just encountered forever.
