The Unseen

An old homeless woman is murdered after glimpsing a light through the basement window of the abandoned 11 Crescent Drive. Young Barney Fielding witnesses the event from his window at number 10. The crime sets an eerie tone and begins the mystery surrounding the house.

Elizabeth Howard arrives to be governess for Barney and Ellen at 11 Crescent Drive. The boy greets her with hostility, shouting, 'You're my enemy! I hate you!' She soon discovers a watch belonging to the murdered old woman in her dressing table, linking the two cases.

Marian Tygarth, the widow owner, returns to put 11 Crescent Drive up for sale. Elizabeth suspects someone is gaining access to the cellars, and confides the fear to David Fielding, who dismisses the concern. Dr. Evans advises Elizabeth not to call the police, mentioning that David was once suspected of murdering his wife.

Ellen reveals to Elizabeth that Barney is the one who lets the lurking man into the house at night, acting on Maxine's orders. Elizabeth begins to sense a web of influence within the household and the danger it implies.

The agency cannot send a replacement that day, and a new maid arrives who Elizabeth eventually realizes is Maxine. David tries to expel Maxine from the house, but she remains. The suspicion thickens as Maxine integrates with the household.

Shortly after her introduction, Maxine is found murdered outside the empty house. David is nowhere to be found, which leads the police to suspect him as the prime culprit.

Mrs. Tygarth tells Ellen that the man who murdered her husband is next door, and that she is being forced to help him clean up the crime from 12 years prior. She knows she is his next victim and tells Elizabeth she intends to call the police.

Instead of calling the police, Mrs. Tygarth goes next door to confront the mysterious man. The unknown killer overpowers her and kills her, silencing the warning she shared with Elizabeth.

Elizabeth seeks help from Dr. Evans for guidance on the escalating situation. When David arrives, he immediately accuses Dr. Evans of the murders, shifting suspicion toward the neighbor rather than himself.

In a confrontation, Dr. Evans is revealed to be the killer. The motive is tied to a past obsession with Mrs. Tygarth, suggesting his actions grew from a dangerous fixation.

The various threads—the watch, the nocturnal intrusions, and the 12-year-old crime—are tied together by Evans’ confession. Elizabeth and the Fieldings confront the consequences of their entangled relationships around 11 Crescent Drive.
