The Unheard

The ending of “The Unheard” reveals a powerful supernatural element connected to Chloe’s mother. Throughout the film, Chloe begins to experience disturbing noises and visions, believing her mother might be trying to communicate with her from the spirit world. It is eventually understood that Chloe’s mother was murdered by Hank, the ex-policeman and the film’s antagonist, who had entered Chloe’s house years earlier and killed her. Hank then hid her body, and his twisted obsession with her persisted, as shown by the discovery of multiple preserved bodies of women and the missing Dr. Lynch—who had been investigating Chloe’s case.

As Chloe is cornered in her house during a storm, Hank tries to kill her, but her chance for survival comes unexpectedly. When Hank approaches her, the eerie, static-filled noise from the old television suddenly intensifies, causing Hank’s distraction and pain. This supernatural interference appears to be the direct action of Chloe’s mother, whose spirit has finally intervened to protect her daughter. Chloe then manages to stab Hank and kill him, with the film suggesting that it was actually her mother’s spirit guiding her to safety.

In the final scenes, Chloe interacts with a video of her mother playing on the TV, leaving viewers with the impression that her mother’s spirit was actively involved in saving her. The film leaves some ambiguity, but it strongly implies that the mother’s spirit, possibly unable to move on, had been trying to reach Chloe all along. Ultimately, her mother’s intervention ensures Chloe’s escape from Hank’s murderous grasp, giving her a sense of closure and a connection to her past that transcends the physical world.
