What Happens in The Tiger: Full Plot Summary

The whole story of The Tiger (2005) explained, from the opening scene to the final frame: every key event, every twist and what it all adds up to. Read it as a quick recap before the sequel, to check a scene you missed, or to finally understand what really happened.

A container filled with counterfeit currency is halted at a checkpoint by the diligent senior customs officer, Thomas Kurien, alongside city police commissioner Rajath Naidu. The situation takes a shocking turn when it is revealed that Rajath is actually part of the criminal syndicate and ends up shooting Kurien to ensure his escape. As months pass by, the story shifts focus to the Director General of the Vigilance Department, Jnanashekara Varma IPS, who sparks controversy during a press conference by alleging that the rise in crime within the state is connected to hawala transactions. His statements cast blame directly on high-ranking officials within both the state cabinet and the police force.

This bold assertion prompts the Chief Minister to summon Varma, along with John Varghese, a Rajya Sabha MP, for a serious discussion. Varma is cautioned to provide a satisfactory explanation in the coming days or face dire consequences. Instead of capitulating to the CM's threats, Varma pushes back, vowing to unveil deeper secrets within the government. However, tragedy strikes when Varma is discovered dead in his bedroom the following morning.

As the plot thickens, it becomes evident that John Varghese is entangled in various hawala dealings throughout the state, even involving terror activities. In order to solve the mystery surrounding Varma's untimely demise, Crime Branch DIG Chandrashekharan IPS is assigned to the case, with the support of Joseph Pothan and Sudev Sachidanand IPS.

Parallel to these events, a young journalist named Suhara Ahammed goes missing along with her close friend Kishore. Suhara is believed to hold crucial information about a minister named Vakkachan. As Chandrashekharan investigates, he meets Suhara's father, Vivekam Ahmed Sahib, who leads him to her computer, revealing several shocking truths. Eventually, Suhara is found critically injured in a forest. Despite being rushed to the hospital, her life continues to be in grave danger.

The investigation deepens as Chandrashekhar learns of Vakkachan's connections to anti-national activities alongside John Varghese, thanks to the tapes Suhara made. This evidence propels Vakkachan to resign from the cabinet and be arrested by Chandrashekhar. The plot thickens as Chandrashekhar follows John Varghese to the seaport to thwart his escape plan to Turkey. In a twist, he discovers that his once-trusted subordinate, Sudev, is actually Musafir, an ISI agent responsible for the deaths of Varma and Kishore.

In an intense showdown, Sudev attempts to shoot Chandrashekhar but is thwarted when it is revealed that the gun provided by Chandrashekhar is unloaded. Despite the chaos, Chandrashekhar's investigative skills lead him to suspect the existence of a traitor among his team, especially when they are ambushed during Suhara's transportation. Once he discovers that Sudev had been present at key moments when Musafir was active, Chandrashekhar delves deeper.

With the help of experts, he breaks into Sudev's home and manages to decrypt vital plans for terrorism stored in Sudev's hard drive and CDs. This crucial evidence aids in thwarting Sudev and Varghese's plots to convert Kerala into a terrorist haven. In a climactic conclusion, Chandrashekhar confronts and eliminates both Musafir and John Varghese using a time bomb, bringing about justice for the chaos they unleashed.

The Tiger Plot Explained: Your Questions Answered

The questions people ask most about The Tiger (2005): what happens in the confusing scenes, why the characters do what they do, the twists, hidden details and what the ending means. Each answer contains spoilers.

Q1

Why did Rajath Naidu shoot Thomas Kurien at the customs checkpoint?

Thomas Kurien, a senior customs officer, had intercepted a container full of counterfeit currency at the checkpoint, threatening to expose the entire smuggling operation. City police commissioner Rajath Naidu, who was secretly part of the syndicate, shot Kurien to protect himself and allow the container to escape, marking the opening act of the conspiracy that The Tiger later investigates.

Q2

Why was Varma killed after his press conference?

Varma's press conference directly accused senior cabinet ministers and police officials of being involved in hawala transactions, making him an immediate threat to the most powerful people in the state. After he refused to retract his statements during a meeting with the Chief Minister and instead threatened to expose even deeper secrets, the conspirators arranged his murder in his own bedroom the next morning to silence him before he could reveal more.

Foreshadowing: The Chief Minister's threatening tone during the meeting, where Varma was warned to provide a satisfactory explanation or face dire consequences, hints that violent consequences were imminent.

Q3

How is Suhara's disappearance connected to Varma's death?

Both cases were branches of the same criminal network involving hawala transactions, political corruption, and anti-national activities. Suhara had uncovered video evidence linking minister Vakkachan to Rajya Sabha MP John Varghese, and the same syndicate responsible for Varma's assassination orchestrated her disappearance and Kishore's murder to prevent the evidence from ever surfacing in The Tiger's investigation.

Q4

Why was Kishore killed alongside Suhara?

Kishore was with Suhara while she was gathering evidence on Vakkachan and John Varghese's anti-national activities, making him a direct eyewitness to her findings. ISI agent Musafir, later revealed to be Chandrashekhar's own subordinate Sudev, eliminated both of them to ensure the recordings on Suhara's computer could never be used as testimony.

  • kishore

Q5

What information did Suhara's computer contain?

Suhara's computer held video recordings that documented minister Vakkachan's direct involvement in anti-national activities alongside Rajya Sabha MP John Varghese. These recordings became the most critical piece of evidence in The Tiger's investigation, directly leading to Vakkachan's arrest and exposing Varghese's role in the larger conspiracy to destabilize Kerala.

  • vakkachan

Q6

Why did Vakkachan resign and get arrested?

Once Chandrashekhar obtained the video evidence from Suhara's computer showing Vakkachan collaborating with Varghese on anti-national activities, he confronted the minister with the recordings. With no way to deny or suppress the evidence, Vakkachan was forced to resign from the cabinet and was immediately taken into custody by Chandrashekhar's team.

Q7

How did Chandrashekhar discover that Sudev was actually an ISI agent?

Chandrashekhar's suspicion grew when he realized that Sudev was consistently present at every key moment when the assassin known as Musafir was active. The unloaded gun incident and the ambush during Suhara's transport confirmed that Sudev was leaking information, prompting Chandrashekhar to break into his home and decrypt his hard drive, which conclusively exposed him as the ISI agent Musafir in The Tiger.

Foreshadowing: The narrative repeatedly shows Sudev appearing at pivotal moments whenever Musafir operates, giving attentive viewers early clues about his true identity.

Q8

Why was the gun Chandrashekhar gave Sudev unloaded?

Chandrashekhar had already grown suspicious of Sudev after noticing patterns that pointed to a mole within his own team. By handing him a gun with no bullets, he set a deliberate trap; if Sudev was loyal, nothing would happen, but if he was the traitor, his attempt to shoot would expose him, which is exactly what unfolded during the confrontation in The Tiger.

Q9

Why was the team ambushed while transporting Suhara?

The ambush was orchestrated by Sudev, operating as ISI agent Musafir, and his network, who used insider knowledge of Chandrashekhar's movements to strike during the transfer. The attack was meant to eliminate Suhara before she could testify, and it served as the pivotal moment that convinced Chandrashekhar a traitor was operating within his own team in The Tiger.

Q10

Why did Chandrashekhar track John Varghese to the seaport?

Chandrashekhar learned that Varghese was planning to flee the country by ship to Turkey to escape prosecution for his role in hawala dealings and anti-national activities. Intercepting him at the seaport was the last opportunity to prevent Varghese from leaving Indian jurisdiction and continuing his operations from abroad, which is why The Tiger stages the chase there.

Q11

What was the plot to convert Kerala into a terrorist haven?

John Varghese, Sudev operating as Musafir, and their associates were channeling hawala money through political and criminal networks to fund terrorist activities aimed at destabilizing Kerala. The decrypted files on Sudev's hard drive contained detailed operational plans for these attacks, which Chandrashekhar used to dismantle the conspiracy before it could be executed in The Tiger.

Q12

Why did Chandrashekhar use a time bomb to eliminate Musafir and Varghese?

Because Sudev was a trained ISI agent embedded in the investigation team and Varghese had powerful political and international connections, a conventional arrest was extremely risky and likely to fail. Using a time bomb allowed Chandrashekhar to eliminate both threats simultaneously in The Tiger, ensuring they could not escape to carry out further attacks or expose classified state information.
