A unit of armed soldiers is dispatched to Brazil’s arid Northeast to prevent a starving populace from seizing a food depot. As hunger drives the locals into delirium and a religious figure fuels their madness, a truck driver watches the chaos, torn between loyalty to his soldier friends and his anger at governmental neglect of the suffering.
