The Echo

Bobby Reynolds completes his prison term and is released on probation from Rikers Island. He begins the uphill process of rebuilding his life under monitoring, trying to stay on the right side of the law.

Upon release, he moves into the old apartment in East Village where his mother lived and died. The empty rooms and familiar walls underscore his isolation as he tries to start over.

Bobby finds work as a mechanic at Houston Auto Repair, owned by Hector Rodriguez, who supports him as he adjusts to life outside prison. The steady job gives him something concrete to cling to as he rebuilds trust with others.

Despite starting anew, Bobby is treated as an outcast by former friends and neighbors who won't talk to him. The cold reception deepens his loneliness and strains his budding relationship with Alyssa.

Bobby reconnects with his former girlfriend Alyssa, who works as a waitress and studies design. They tentatively resume their relationship, even as the weight of his past and the hauntings test them.

Bobby begins hearing strange noises and discovers blood on his mother's pillow. He finds a hole in the wall behind the piano and, when he pokes his finger in, something draws blood. He also uncovers bloody fingernails wrapped in cloth inside the piano.

He overhears an argument between Walter, Gina, and Carly next door in Room 517. He learns from the manager that Room 517 has been empty for years and realizes that the past violence haunts the present.

During another evening, Bobby overhears Walter beating Gina and sees Carly standing in front of his door. He invites Carly in and calls the police on the tenants next door, but he discovers that Room 517 has been empty for several years.

Joseph, another tenant who had been experiencing the same visions, comes face-to-face with the ghosts in his apartment. His body is later discovered, and the police look at Bobby as a possible suspect.

The ghosts of Gina and Carly begin haunting other individuals connected with Bobby and the building, including Alyssa during her design final and Hector when he comes to apologize. The hauntings spread, threatening those around him even as Bobby tries to keep them at bay.

While interrogating tenants, Bobby learns that Walter had beaten his wife to death years ago and dumped his daughter's body down the garbage chute. Gina’s banging on doors and the community's inaction—including Bobby's mother—helped fuel the haunting.

Hector dies by falling down a staircase while fleeing Carly’s ghost. Alyssa, haunted by Walter’s ghost, is dragged toward Room 517, mimicking the murder and intensifying the danger.

Bobby intervenes as Alyssa is dragged into the past, saving her from the worst of the reenactment. He steps in just as Walter is about to kill Gina; Gina strikes Walter with his nightstick, and the ghosts vanish along with Carly and her mother.

With the haunting resolved, Bobby comforts Alyssa as police approach the apartment, suggesting a fragile peace has returned to the building. The memory of what happened lingers as they face an uncertain future.
