Retired FBI Special Agent Joel Campbell struggles with the unsettling memories of his past work. His tenure in Los Angeles was marked by a failure to capture a notorious serial killer, haunting him deeply.

To cope with his trauma, Campbell attends therapy sessions with Dr. Polly Beilman. Despite her efforts, Campbell's emotional state remains fragile, and he finds himself increasingly isolated from the world.

Campbell learns of a murder that occurs in his own apartment building, triggering alarm bells in his mind. Initially indifferent, he becomes concerned when he realizes a photograph of the victim had been sent to him days earlier.

Realizing the notorious serial killer may have resurfaced in Chicago, Campbell starts to piece together the clues. His findings attract the attention of Detective Mackie, who joins him in the investigation.

FBI Special Agent in Charge Ibby insists that Campbell rejoin the investigation due to his inside knowledge. However, Campbell's reluctance to return to the field showcases his ongoing inner turmoil.

Campbell is unexpectedly contacted by David Griffin, the serial killer who taunts him with a chilling ultimatum. Griffin threatens to send a photo of a girl, giving Campbell until 9:00 PM to find her, igniting a sense of urgency.

Determined to save the girl, Campbell re-enters the case alongside Detective Mackie. Their tireless efforts to track the victim lead them closer to Griffin, but danger lurks at every corner.

Griffin lures Campbell to Lisa's grave for a dramatic confrontation. He reveals that Dr. Beilman is captive, triggering a desperate need for Campbell to save her from Griffin's clutches.

During the tense drive to Dr. Beilman's location, Campbell attempts to negotiate with Griffin. Despite the perilous situation, he cleverly keeps Mackie informed of the dire circumstances.
