Retired FBI Special Agent Joel Campbell, portrayed by James Spader, finds himself grappling with the darkness of his past in Chicago. Once a dedicated agent, he continues to wrestle with the haunting memory of his inability to apprehend a serial killer during his tenure in Los Angeles. Now, his days are filled with therapy sessions from Dr. Polly Beilman, played by Marisa Tomei, yet his social life remains virtually nonexistent.

Things take a distressing turn when Campbell learns of a murder that occurred in his apartment building. Initially indifferent, a shocking moment of realization strikes him when he discovers that just days prior to the tragedy, a photograph of the victim was sent to his mail. Alarm bells ring as he deduces that the notorious serial killer may have resurfaced in Chicago. Detective Mackie, portrayed by Chris Ellis, is brought into the fold as Campbell shares his critical findings. Despite the insistence from FBI Special Agent in Charge Ibby (Ernie Hudson) to rejoin the investigation, Campbell’s reluctance is steadfast.

The ordeal escalates when Campbell receives a chilling phone call from David Griffin, the personification of terror played by Keanu Reeves. Griffin reveals his sinister intent to rekindle the ‘rapport’ they once shared, stating ominously, >“I’ll send you a photo of a girl in the morning. You have until 9:00 PM to find her.” This triggers a desperate race against time as Campbell re-enters the case with renewed vigor, rallying his team—including Detective Mackie—to locate the girl before it’s too late.

However, as they close in on Griffin, he proves to be a formidable adversary, mercilessly claiming another victim despite their best efforts. Campbell sustains injuries during a frantic pursuit, illustrating the grave dangers he faces. The tension escalates further when another photograph arrives, revealing the likeness of Lisa Anton (Yvonne Niami), a tragic figure from Campbell’s past. Griffin entices Campbell into a confrontation at Lisa’s grave, where he reveals that he has Dr. Beilman captive.

Determined to save her, Campbell engages in a high-stakes negotiation with Griffin. During their drive to the location of Beilman’s imprisonment, Griffin unnervingly expresses his perceived friendship with Campbell. However, amidst this complexity, Campbell cleverly contacts Mackie, secretly sharing his dire situation.

The finale unfolds at an abandoned warehouse where Campbell faces Griffin and rushes to untie Dr. Beilman from her binds, surrounded by the ominous presence of flammable materials. Just as the police close in, a battle ensues, culminating in a fiery explosion that claims Griffin’s life. Campbell and Beilman emerge from the chaos, their harrowing ordeal finally coming to a tense but hopeful conclusion.
