The Vanishing

In the gripping tale of The Vanishing, directed by Kristoffer Nyholm, the story unfolds in 1900 amidst a mystery that has puzzled many for over a century. Following the unexplained disappearance of three lighthouse keepers on the west coast of Scotland, this narrative, also known as The Flannan Isle Mystery, dives deep into a real-life enigma that has inspired various artistic interpretations, from poems to video games.

The film stars a talented cast that includes the likes of Gerard Butler as James, Connor Swindells as Donald, and Peter Mullan as well as Søren Malling and Ólafur Darri Ólafsson, all of whom deliver performances that bring tension and complexity to the story. The plot begins when a group of investigators discovers the lighthouse abandoned, prompting an exploration into the fates of the keepers: James Ducat, Thomas Marshall, and Donald MacArthur. What happened to them remains unclear and has given rise to numerous theories ranging from supernatural abductions to piracy and even alien encounters.

As the narrative progresses, we quickly realize that the tensions built within the isolated setting are palpable. After a fierce storm, Donald stumbles upon a deep crevice, leading to a shocking discovery: the dead body of a man alongside remnants of a small rowboat. What ensues when Connor Swindells is lowered down into the crevice results in a struggle for survival, revealing a desperate fight against a man protecting a chest filled with gold bars—something the three keepers were unaware of at that moment.

However, the arrival of two more men, in pursuit of this gold, played by Søren Malling and Ólafur Darri Ólafsson, adds another layer of intrigue, yet leaves the audience navigating through moments of vagueness and ambiguity. The film provides no clear answers regarding the origins of the treasure or the circumstances that led to the chaos within the lighthouse, compelling the viewer to fill in the blanks with their own theories.

As the plot unfolds, it straddles the line between thriller and drama, yet fails to deliver a strong resolution that underscores the stakes involved. Nyholm, despite his strong background in television with successes such as “The Killing” and “Taboo,” encounters difficulties in maintaining a compelling momentum throughout the film. Critics have pointed out the lack of clarity regarding the characters’ motivations and the storyline itself, leading to an overall bland experience and a sense of dissatisfaction.

Throughout the slow-paced narrative, cinematic elements such as Johansson’s cinematography do manage to captivate the viewer visually, illuminating the struggles and complexities faced by the characters.
