What Happens in The Quarry: Full Plot Summary

The whole story of The Quarry (2020) explained, from the opening scene to the final frame: every key event, every twist and what it all adds up to. Read it as a quick recap before the sequel, to check a scene you missed, or to finally understand what really happened.

On a West Texas road, Preacher David Martín discovers a man unconscious and heads to Bevel to take up his new post. At a nearby quarry, the stranger shoots the preacher and heads toward Bevel.

Arriving at the house where the real David Martín was to stay, the impostor is taken in by Celia, the girlfriend of Chief John Moore, of the three-man local sheriff's department.

Celia's cousins, adult Valentin and teenaged Poco, run marijuana operations at the quarry, and steal the real preacher's belongings from the van, including bloody clothes. They are later arrested at the quarry, but the Chief finds the body and charges the cousins with murder.

The impostor is well liked by the local churchgoers, who see him as a forgiving, nonjudgmental preacher.

The Chief suspects guilt but cannot prove anything. Valentin confesses to the murder to save Poco, and then escapes the court, only to be shot by the Chief and fade into the darkness. The impostor happens to find him the next day and admits that he did kill the real David Martín, explaining that he had been on the run after killing his wife and her lover. Valentin then kills the impostor, but dies from his wounds.

Celia and Poco leave town together.

The questions people ask most about The Quarry (2020): what happens in the confusing scenes, why the characters do what they do, the twists, hidden details and what the ending means. Each answer contains spoilers.

Q1

Why does Valentin confess to killing the real preacher?

Valentin confesses to save his younger cousin Poco. When both cousins are arrested at the quarry as murder suspects, Valentin takes full responsibility for the crime to protect Poco from facing serious criminal consequences. This act of sacrifice ultimately leads to his escape from the courthouse and subsequent confrontation with the real killer.

Foreshadowing: Earlier, the cousins are shown working together at their marijuana operation, establishing their close family bond.

Q2

What happens to Valentin after he escapes from the courthouse?

After confessing to save Poco, Valentin escapes from the courthouse. Chief John Moore shoots him during the escape, but Valentin manages to stagger into the darkness and survives. The next day, he encounters the impostor, who reveals the truth about killing the real David Martín. Valentin then kills the impostor in retaliation but dies from his wounds shortly afterward.

Foreshadowing: The Chief's shooting of Valentin during the escape creates the conditions for their final confrontation.

Q3

Why does the impostor tell Valentin about his past?

The impostor reveals his backstory to Valentin because he is trapped by guilt and the desperate need to confess to someone. When he finds the wounded Valentin in the outskirts of Bevel, he admits that he killed the real David Martín and explains that he had been on the run after murdering his wife and her lover. This confession is driven by his psychological burden rather than strategic thinking.

Foreshadowing: The impostor's initial act of killing the preacher demonstrates he is already running from violent crimes.

Q4

How does Chief John Moore know the impostor is guilty?

Chief Moore becomes suspicious because the impostor arrives in town exactly when the real preacher was supposed to arrive, yet he cannot prove his guilt. The Chief investigates by interviewing townsfolk and pursuing leads, but lacks concrete evidence. His suspicion is based on timing and the impostor's behavior, though the film does not show him obtaining definitive proof before the final confrontations.

Foreshadowing: The Chief's early suspicion is fueled by the unexplained circumstances surrounding the real preacher's disappearance.

Q5

Why do Celia and Poco leave Bevel at the end?

Celia and Poco leave town together because the violence and deception have destroyed their lives in Bevel. With Valentin dead, Poco has lost his cousin and partner in the marijuana operation, while Celia has been emotionally entangled with the impostor and involved in the town's tragedy. Their departure represents a attempt to escape the wreckage and start fresh elsewhere.

Foreshadowing: Celia initially welcomes the impostor into her home, showing her disconnected relationship with the truth.

Q6

What is the significance of the quarry in the story?

The quarry serves as the central location where the real David Martín is murdered and where key evidence is hidden. It is also where Valentin and Poco run their marijuana operation, making it a location of both criminal activity and the murder mystery. The discovery of the body at the quarry triggers the murder investigation that drives much of the film's tension.

Foreshadowing: The impostor murders David at the quarry before heading to Bevel, establishing it as a place of violence.

Q7

Why does Valentin kill the impostor at the end?

Valentin kills the impostor in retaliation after learning the truth. When the impostor admits to killing the real David Martín, Valentin sees an opportunity for revenge against the actual murderer rather than accepting a false confession. He kills the impostor but dies from his wounds shortly after, ending both their lives in the outskirts of Bevel.

Foreshadowing: The impostor's confession provides Valentin with both motive and opportunity for this final act of violence.

Q8

Why do Valentin and Poco steal the preacher's belongings?

Valentin and Poco steal the real preacher's belongings, including his bloody clothes, from the van to potentially plant evidence or confuse investigators. Operating their marijuana operation at the quarry, they stumble upon the van and seize the opportunity to meddle with the crime scene, though their actions ultimately implicate them in the murder they did not commit.

Foreshadowing: Their criminal background makes them natural suspects when the body is discovered.

Q9

Why do the townspeople accept the impostor as their preacher?

The townspeople accept the impostor because he delivers heartfelt sermons about forgiveness and comes across as nonjudgmental, unlike what they may have expected from a traditional preacher. His compassionate demeanor and willingness to embrace the community's values make him well-liked, despite the fact that he is a murderer and fugitive hiding behind a stolen identity.

Foreshadowing: His ability to deceive the community contrasts with Chief Moore's growing suspicion.

Ending explained

What Happens at the End of The Quarry?

How The Quarry (2020) ends, in short: the final scene, the last twist and what it means for the characters. The full ending explained, with every spoiler, lives on its own page.

Read the full ending explained

The ending of The Quarry is intentionally open and somewhat ambiguous, reflecting the game's focus on multiple possible outcomes. Throughout the game, players have the chance to make choices that determine which characters survive and which meet their demise. When the credits roll, the narrative is summarized through news headlines and a podcast played on a computer, offering a detached reflection on the night's events. Unlike many stories that provide clear resolution for the characters, The Quarry presents a variety of endings—186 in total—but in doing so, it sacrifices depth and emotional closure. The most notable differences between the endings revolve around which counselors live or die and the fate of the Hackett family.

The endings are subtle in their variations, with some simply altering which characters survive, while others hint at larger consequences like the Hackett family's future. However, because there are so many possible outcomes, none of the endings delve deeply into the characters' afterlives or offer a satisfying resolution to their stories. Instead, the game concludes on a somewhat cold note, with the counselors' fates forgotten beyond the immediate aftermath, leaving players feeling a sense of unresolved loss. This multitude of endings means that the game prioritizes quantity over storytelling quality, resulting in a narrative that lacks the emotional weight and closure one might hope for after such a tense and character-driven story. In essence, while the varied endings showcase the game's replayability, they ultimately undermine the story's impact by leaving many character journeys unfinished and unresolved.
