The Trial of the Incredible Hulk (1989) – Full Plot Summary & Ending Explained

Read the complete plot breakdown of The Trial of the Incredible Hulk (1989), including all key story events, major twists, and the ending explained in detail. Discover what really happened—and what it all means.

Still on the run, David Bruce Banner makes his way toward a sprawling city, hoping to keep his cover as David Belson. This metropolis is not just a backdrop; it is a place where crime bosses tighten their grip and a formidable figure named Wilson Fisk rules from the shadows. At the same time, a mysterious vigilante known as Daredevil keeps a close watch over the streets, blending into the city’s maze of alleys and high-rise towers.

On a crowded commuter train, Banner intervenes when two passengers assault a woman, Ellie Mendez. The struggle escalates quickly, and the assailants strike Banner, triggering a dramatic transformation into the Hulk that reverberates through the car and the surrounding crowd. The ensuing chaos draws police attention, and Banner is arrested, charged with attacking Ellie—who insists that her actual attackers saved her from Banner’s outburst.

Blind defense attorney Matt Murdock offers to take Banner’s case pro bono publico, explaining that Ellie’s attackers work for Fisk and that he is determined to bring Fisk down. As Matt works to understand Banner’s side of the story, Ellie is questioned and appears conflicted, especially after Matt overhears her discussing visitors who have been to see her on Fisk’s behalf. Fisk, never one to leave witnesses unprotected, has a nurse—one of his agents—attempt to silence Ellie with a lethal injection, but Daredevil breaks into the hospital and stops the nurse.

Ellie, feeling betrayed and fearing for her parents, calls Matt and offers to tell the truth about the assault if he can guarantee protection for her family, who Fisk’s men have threatened. Before Matt can meet with her for a statement, Fisk abducts Ellie from protective custody. Meanwhile, Banner experiences a nightmare about the Hulk taking the stand in his upcoming trial; the nightmare becomes reality when Banner fully transforms in prison, and the Hulk erupts free from confinement.

Daredevil traces the apartment where Banner is staying and confronts him, hoping to convince Banner to stand trial. Banner, wary of Daredevil’s loyalties, unmasks himself as [Matt Murdock], prompting a direct explanation of Daredevil’s origin: a radiation accident blinded him at fourteen, granting enhanced senses and a “radar sense,” and inspiring him to become a protector of the innocent, guided by police contact Albert G. Tendelli. Banner’s candor and medical insight help restore Daredevil’s confidence, and the two begin to explore a cooperative path while Matt starts retraining his body with Banner’s support.

Amid the tension, Fisk convenes a meeting of crime bosses to propose a nationwide syndicate with himself at the helm. He also flaunts footage that seems to show Daredevil’s apparent death, using it as leverage to clear the path for his expansions. Daredevil and Banner join forces to infiltrate Fisk’s office tower, aiming to discredit Fisk and rescue Ellie. Banner’s presence helps shift the balance of power, and with the help of Fisk’s right-hand man Edgar, who hints at having saved people from Fisk on previous occasions, they manage to reach Ellie and escape. In a decisive moment, Daredevil disrupts Fisk’s control, the crime bosses scatter, and Ellie’s fate is secured.

With the immediate danger resolved, Banner and Matt part on amicable terms, recognizing the strength in their unlikely alliance. Banner heads toward a radiation laboratory in Portland in search of a cure that could address his own condition, while Matt remains in the city to continue protecting it, inspired by Banner’s compassion, resilience, and willingness to work alongside someone who shares his commitment to justice. The city, and its heroes, linger in a delicate balance between violence and hope, as the two men forge a cautious—but powerful—partnership that could redefine what it means to stand up for the vulnerable in a world ruled by fear.
