Thor: Ragnarok

Two years following the Sokovia showdown, Thor finds himself in a precarious situation, imprisoned by the fire demon Surtur in Muspelheim while on a relentless quest for the Infinity Stones. Surtur unveils a startling truth: Thor’s father, Odin, is no longer in Asgard, having been exiled on Earth. He ominously warns that Asgard faces imminent destruction during the foretold Ragnarok, a fate that can be triggered once Surtur unites his crown with the Eternal Flame housed within Odin’s vault.

Claiming that he cannot perish until his destiny unfolds, Surtur reveals his intention to obliterate Asgard. In a bid to avert disaster, Thor fights and vanquishes Surtur, taking his crown in what he believes is a victory against Ragnarok. However, he soon discovers that he needs Heimdall to help him escape through the Bifrost. Unfortunately, Heimdall is nowhere to be found.

Amidst this chaos, the Asgardian warrior Skurge stands guard over the Bifrost while Heimdall is absent. Luckily, he eventually hears Thor’s calls and assists in his escape. Upon returning to Asgard, Thor uncovers a shocking twist: his brother Loki is impersonating Odin, and Heimdall has gone missing. In their search for their father, they discover that Loki left Odin at a nursing home in New York, only to find the place demolished and their father lost.

With a little help from Stephen Strange, who tracks all arrivals on Earth and warns Thor about Loki as a potential threat, they manage to locate Odin in Norway. Odin, on his deathbed, shares a dire prophecy: his death will unleash his firstborn child, Hela, the Goddess of Death, from her ancient prison. Once a conqueror by Odin’s side, Hela was cast out of history due to her overwhelming ambition.

Upon Odin’s death, Hela emerges, shattering Thor’s hammer, Mjolnir. When Thor and Loki attempt to escape through the Bifrost, Hela relentlessly pursues them, casting them adrift in space. Arriving in Asgard, Hela wreaks havoc, annihilating its warriors and resurrecting ancient foes, including her monstrous wolf, Fenris. She cunningly coerces Skurge into aiding her quest for expansion, while Heimdall secretly gathers the remaining citizens of Asgard inside a concealed cave.

Crash-landing on Sakaar, a garbage planet enveloped by wormholes, Thor is taken captive by the bounty hunter known as Scrapper 142. She brings him to the Grandmaster, [Jeff Goldblum], the capricious ruler of Sakaar, exploiting Thor as a gladiator. Stripped of his hammer, Thor finds himself powerless. When he seeks help from Loki, he is met with betrayal. The Grandmaster promises freedom to Thor if he can defeat the champion of Sakaar in battle.

In a dramatic twist, Thor unexpectedly faces his old ally, the Hulk. Initially thrilled, Thor quickly realizes that the Hulk has lost all memory of him, leading to a fierce confrontation. Using his newfound ability to summon lightning without Mjolnir, Thor comes close to victory until the Grandmaster sabotages the fight, ensuring Hulk’s win.

Still captured, Thor seeks to rally Hulk and Scrapper 142 for assistance in saving their home, but they remain unwilling. However, Thor learns from Hulk that he arrived on Sakaar on a Quinjet. He attempts to summon Heimdall, connecting with him to find that Hela has completely seized Asgard. Heimdall advises Thor to take the largest cosmic pathway back home.

Thor escapes and discovers the Quinjet that transported Hulk. Following a sequence of events, a message from Natasha Romanoff triggers Hulk’s transformation back into Bruce Banner for the first time since Sokovia. Meanwhile, Loki and Scrapper 142 decide to join forces with Thor, and after some conflicts, they hatch a plan to liberate the other gladiators, led by Korg and Miek, staging an uprising against the Grandmaster.

Despite double-crossing attempts by Loki to earn the Grandmaster’s favor, Thor manages to evade betrayal and escapes through a wormhole back to Asgard, where they find Hela’s soldiers attacking the remaining Asgardians. With help from the gladiators and a heroic sacrifice from Skurge, they fight back against Hela.

As the conflict escalates, Thor faces the heart-wrenching truth that only Ragnarok can vanquish Hela. In an intense moment, Thor has a vision of Odin that reawakens his true powers. With Loki’s help, Surtur is resurrected through Odin’s Eternal Flame, resulting in the destruction of Asgard while seemingly defeating Hela. The surviving Asgardians escape aboard the Grandmaster’s ship, with Thor embracing his role as king and looking to lead his people to Earth.

As the mid-credits unfold, a massive spacecraft ominously intercepts their ship. The post-credits scene features the Grandmaster confronting a group of disgruntled former subjects, hinting at further chaos ahead.
