The Straight Story

In Laurens, Iowa, Alvin Straight suffers a fall in his kitchen. This incident leads his daughter, Rose, to take him to see a doctor, highlighting Alvin's frail health at the age of 73.

Alvin receives alarming news one stormy night about his estranged brother, Lyle, who has suffered a stroke. The discovery sparks a sense of urgency in Alvin, stirring long-buried emotions after ten years of silence.

Driven by his desire to reconnect with Lyle, Alvin decides to undertake an unconventional journey. He plans to travel 370 miles to Mount Zion, Wisconsin, despite his failing health and mobility issues.

Alvin sets off on his journey riding a Rehd lawn mower, equipped with supplies and a trailer. Although Rose expresses her concerns, Alvin reassures her, indicating the adventure and purpose behind his voyage.

Shortly after leaving town, Alvin's lawn mower breaks down unexpectedly. Frustrated but resolute, he returns home and puts the broken mower out of its misery with a shotgun blast.

Determined to continue, Alvin purchases a new lawn tractor from a generous salesman at the John Deere shop. This marks a fresh start for his long and determined journey on September 5.

Alvin encounters a pregnant hitchhiker during his travels, to whom he shares his wisdom about family and togetherness. He expresses the importance of unity, imparting warmth and life lessons.

Alvin finds solace while watching a rainstorm from the safety of an abandoned farmhouse. This moment allows him to reflect on his emotional journey and the challenge ahead.

Alvin encounters a distraught woman who has accidentally hit a deer. Honoring the animal's sacrifice, he prepares a meal from it, transforming a tragedy into a respectful tribute.

As Alvin continues his journey, he receives generous assistance from local farmers and mechanics. Their kindness reinforces the community spirit as they relate to his quest for reconciliation with Lyle.
