An aging, ailing author named Leonard Schiller is on the brink of completing his final novel, having gone years without a new publication despite the acclaim his earlier works received. Enter Heather, a young and captivating graduate student who is eager to write her thesis on Leonard’s impressive literary career. After several persuasive meetings, she manages to coax him into sharing his thoughts, leaving him both flattered and inspired by her admiration.

As Leonard becomes more accustomed to Heather’s presence, he discovers that she is not only fascinated by his writing but also harbors a romantic interest in him. Simultaneously, his daughter wrestles with her desire to start a family amidst her rekindled relationship with an ex-boyfriend, who is resolute in not wanting children.

In an intimate turn of events, Heather’s flirtations towards Leonard intensify, leading to an invitation to share a bed. They fall asleep together, and upon awakening, a newfound comfort envelops their relationship. However, when Heather learns from an editor about Leonard’s complicated marital history, she confronts him, prompting an emotional outburst from Leonard. Yet, in a moment of undeniable connection, they share a passionate kiss after he invites her to spend the night.

Despite this emotional charge, when Heather presents her initial thesis draft, she suddenly puts distance between them, visibly disturbed by his advances. Leonard, having reviewed her work, provides constructive criticism, which she appreciates, even if it doesn’t align perfectly with her views. Meanwhile, a stroke strikes Leonard unexpectedly, leading Heather to assist him to the hospital for urgent care.

After a month of recovery, Leonard is glad to see Heather but is taken aback and reacts harshly when he impulsively slaps her after attempting to gently touch her face. Overwhelmed, Heather senses she has crossed some unseen line, though it’s unclear why.

In a parallel narrative, Leonard’s daughter and her boyfriend take it upon themselves to ensure Leonard attends his doctor’s appointment, showcasing the strained yet affectionate relationships in his life. Leonard, in a bittersweet gesture, entrusts his unfinished manuscript to the boyfriend, suggesting he see it through to completion.

The movie culminates in a poignant scene where Leonard, preparing for bed one quiet evening, is momentarily distracted from his toast and tea. Instead, he chooses to sit at his typewriter, staring at a blank page. After deep reflection, he begins to write again, symbolizing a poignant return to his craft amidst the complexities of life and love.
