Lena Kaligaris, Bridget Vreeland, Carmen Lowell, and Tibby Rollins are four inseparable friends on the brink of a summer that will profoundly test their bond. As they prepare for their individual journeys, they discover a pair of jeans that seem to magically fit each of them. This serendipitous find inspires them to agree on a unique plan: they will share the pants throughout the summer, using them as a symbol of their enduring friendship before they go their separate ways.

In the sun-soaked streets of Santorini, Greece, Lena encounters Kostas Dounas, a charming local boy who saves her from a near-drowning mishap. As they get to know each other, Lena uncovers the shocking truth that their families’ pasts are intertwined in a way that could spell disaster for their blossoming romance. Nevertheless, Kostas doggedly pursues Lena, promising her that the animosity between their families should not affect what they share. As Lena grapples with her growing feelings, Kostas vulnerably professes his love, but is interrupted by her family, leaving her in a state of uncertainty.

Meanwhile, Tibby’s life takes an unexpected turn when she stumbles upon Bailey Graffman, a young girl who collapses at a shopping plaza and is rushed to the hospital. Little does Tibby know, Bailey’s life will continue to intertwine with hers, as Bailey accidentally drops the jeans at Tibby’s home. Enthralled by Tibby’s passion for filmmaking, Bailey slowly ingratiates herself into her life, evolving from a mere acquaintance to a close confidante. As Tibby learns about Bailey’s battle with leukemia, their relationship deepens. During a visit to the hospital, Bailey encourages Tibby to take the jeans for herself, recognizing the magic that has already drawn them together. Ultimately, Tibby opts to cherish their moments instead, crafting a film inspired by Bailey’s inspiring journey.

Carmen’s trip to South Carolina reveals a painful truth: her father, Al, is about to marry Lydia, who arrives with two children who are eerily similar to Carmen. This stark contrast to her own upbringing serves to reignite feelings of abandonment from her father. Although Al and his new family attempt to connect, Carmen feels invisible as they quickly shower affection on Paul and Krista. A seemingly innocent visit to a dress shop ends in tears when a thoughtless remark brings old wounds to the surface, leading to a confrontation with Lydia and Carmen storming away, leaving behind emotional turmoil.

Upon returning to Maryland, Carmen’s frustrations come to a head during an altercation with Tibby, but the two eventually mend their friendship through heartfelt apologies. Tibby’s sage advice prompts Carmen to confront her father, and during a phone call, she unravels years of pent-up hurt. While Al’s apology seems genuine, it ultimately falls short, leaving Carmen feeling unresolved and unheard.

During this summer, Bridget finds herself captivated by her soccer coach, Eric Richman. Ignoring the strict rules against camper-coach relationships, Bridget flirts with him relentlessly. The two share a passionate night on the beach, where Bridget loses her virginity. However, the aftermath weighs heavily on her as depression sets in, driving her away from her friends and loved ones.

When Lena writes to share the news of Bridget’s struggles, the trio rushes to her side in solidarity. Sitting together, Bridget reveals her fear of succumbing to her mother’s legacy of depression. Yet, Lena and Tibby reassure her that she possesses far greater strength. In a heartfelt moment, Eric stops by to apologize and express his desire for redemption, leaving Bridget with lingering uncertainty.

As the girls prepare to fly home, they are greeted by Lena who welcomes them with warmth. Their journey leads them to South Carolina for Carmen’s father’s wedding—a day that promises hope and healing. Initially hesitant, Carmen decides to join her friends in support, and during the ceremony, a poignant moment unfolds. Al publicly acknowledges his past failures, offering Carmen a heartfelt apology. As tears of forgiveness are shed, Carmen navigates a torrent of emotions but ultimately chooses to embrace her new family. With her friends by her side, she stands on stage, embodying resilience and the promise of new beginnings.
