The Seventh Sign

Across the globe, signs of an apocalypse emerge with eerie regularity. Haiti reports mass deaths of sea life, while the Middle East suffers a devastating freeze, and at each location a mysterious traveler appears and opens a sealed envelope just before the event. The Vatican begins monitoring these phenomena, hoping for a rational explanation.

The Vatican assigns Father Lucci to investigate the incidents and determine their meaning. Lucci warns that many events may be hoaxes or natural phenomena, but he continues the inquiry for the sake of the faith.

Abby Quinn, pregnant with her child, lives in California while her husband Russell defends Jimmy Szaragosa, a man on death row. The couple rents a room to the enigmatic traveler David Bannon, who quickly ingratiates himself into their home. David's arrival triggers a sequence of unsettling events that intertwine with the global omens.

David tells stories about the Hebrew myth of the Guf, claiming souls come from a celestial place and that a sparrow's song marks the arrival of a soul. Abby grows increasingly unnerved as she notices odd behavior and the mounting evidence in David's papers. He uses the myth to imply deeper, ominous plans.

Abby begins to have disturbing nightmares featuring a man who resembles David being struck down by a Roman soldier and asks, 'will you die for him?' The dreams coincide with the unfolding omens, and she experiences unexplained, physical reactions. These visions heighten her fear that something terrible is imminent.

She discovers an ancient note in David's papers that hints at harming her unborn child. When she confronts him, he dismisses the fear, claiming that God's grace is empty and that no souls will remain for newborns.

David reveals his true identity as the Second Coming of Jesus Christ, shrugging off injuries with a mounting glow. Abby learns she is the reincarnation of Seraphia, the woman who offered Jesus water, while Cartaphilus stands at the center of the biblical drama.

The apocalyptic signs intensify into a giant storm as Abby seeks guidance from Avi, a rabbinical student. Father Lucci travels to California to continue his investigation, and Abby realizes the ring on Lucci's finger matches Cartaphilus's, hinting at his true nature.

Abby and Avi turn to a Bible to learn what comes next and discover the sixth sign will be a solar eclipse arriving the next day. They also deduce that the fifth sign—the martyr's death for God's cause—will occur very soon.

Abby realizes Jimmy Szaragosa's execution will fulfill the fifth sign and drives to the prison to intervene. Lucci has already infiltrated the facility; he kills Jimmy and wounds Abby, and is escorted away by guards.

The solar eclipse begins, signaling the sixth sign, as a catastrophic earthquake rocks the world. The signs overwhelm Abby and others as disaster spreads, deepening the sense of doom.

Abby goes into labor as the disaster rages around her. Despite doctors' efforts, the baby's heart stops beating, seemingly fulfilling the seventh sign.

Abby experiences a vision of Seraphia and realizes her soul is moving to the child. The baby revives as Abby's soul enters him, and Abby dies in the process.

Jesus appears in the hospital and tells Russell that Abby's sacrifice has refilled the Hall of Souls, ensuring humanity's continuation. He instructs Avi to record this miracle for future humanity.
