Tom Nigard confirms through handwriting comparison that the governor’s typewriter produced the same document, intensifying the conflict between truth and scandal. That night, as Daniel reassures Willis, the ominous tension tightens around everyone connected to the affair. Ruth visits Robert Sheldon at his apartment to reinforce her belief in her father’s innocence. In a grim coincidence, Hazel Normandie, Hazel, the secretary, leaves the building with plans to meet Daniel—only for Daniel to be shot soon after. Ruth witnesses the event from a window, but because of her secret marriage, cannot reveal what she knows to the police.

The investigation swiftly flags Hazel as the initial suspect, linked to the gun used in Daniel’s death—the same gun Daniel had previously taken from her, supposedly to safeguard her—but the courtroom drama will demand more than suspicion. A raucous legislative session erupts as Representative McPherson accuses the governor and Sheldon of withholding evidence, while Representative Grosvenor defends them with political savviness. The trial approaches, and Hazel’s fate hangs in the balance as Ruth remains reluctant to testify against the man she loves, fearing the fallout on their own marriage.

He confesses that Daniel pressured him to plant the incriminating note and to press Holdstock for money—and that the murder of Holdstock was the result of that grim confrontation. He also admits that the supposed suicide was a setup, and that the whole frame-up originated with Jim Lansdale, who typed the incriminating letter on the governor’s study’s typewriter to ruin his old ally. The committee’s vote to drop the charges becomes a pivotal moment as Lansdale, cornered by his own guilt, kills himself and ends his scheme.

In the aftermath, the governor reluctantly accepts the complexity of truth and displays a rare, quiet support for Ruth and Robert’s marriage.
