Read the complete plot breakdown of The Scary of Sixty-First (2021), including all key story events, major twists, and the ending explained in detail. Discover what really happened—and what it all means.

Noelle and Addie, two young adults, are on the lookout for an apartment in the bustling Upper East Side. Despite the strange features of the apartment—such as its abandoned furnishings and a rather suspicious realtor—they decide to make it their home. On their first night, Noelle stumbles upon a tarot card, while Addie becomes increasingly tormented by a series of nightmares.

Things take a turn when a mysterious girl, previously seen by Noelle and Addie peering in from the street, arrives at their door. Initially masquerading as a realtor, she discloses her intent to delve into the activities of the infamous sex trafficker Jeffrey Epstein, suggesting the apartment might have a dark past linked to him, which may involve devastating crimes like child prostitution and even murder. The intrigued Noelle and the girl begin an obsessive quest, researching conspiracy theories surrounding Epstein’s demise and his notorious actions, culminating in a budding romantic relationship. Meanwhile, Addie struggles with her mental health, wandering the streets of New York in a distracted daze.

During an intimate moment with her boyfriend, Greg, Addie asks him to act out a scenario involving Epstein’s ‘Lolita Express’ private jet and behaves in a child-like manner, completely unaware of the situation afterward. She also finds herself attracted to images of Prince Andrew, a known associate of Epstein, while engaging in juvenile antics.

As Noelle and the girl further investigate, they discover two additional properties owned by Epstein just blocks away, leading Noelle to hypothesize a connection to a pentagram shape. The girl discovers a tarot card in Addie’s bedroom, prompting a visit to a so-called “magical apothecary,” where the cryptic shop owner warns them to vacate the apartment as soon as possible, handing them an obsidian crystal for protection.

Returning home, they find Addie still entranced, engrossed in thoughts of Prince Andrew. In a shocking twist, Noelle and the girl travel to the Metropolitan Correctional Center, where Epstein met his end, only to find Addie there, dressed similarly to a young girl in a photograph with him. They soon hear from Greg about a disturbing incident involving him and Addie.

The girl proposes that Addie’s behavior may be a consequence of CIA mind control tactics reminiscent of Project MKUltra and ominously suggests that Addie has become a liability that should be eliminated—a notion which Noelle outright rejects. Later, the girl rushes to the apartment, only to find it sealed shut, with signs of Addie’s disturbing behaviors showcased.

In a terrifying encounter in the basement, the girl confronts Addie before a huge poster depicting the Sun tarot card, which has disturbing images of nude children. When she is discovered, Addie violently attacks her. Just as things escalate, Noelle arrives and, in a frantic struggle, kills Addie by stabbing her multiple times. Following this, Noelle meets the realtor, and their conversation hints that Addie’s death might have been orchestrated as part of a satanic ritual.

Reviving from her unconscious state, the girl discovers Noelle in the apartment, leading to a fierce fight where she defends herself with the obsidian crystal. She escapes to Greg’s workplace, but upon their return to the apartment, everything appears eerily normal and devoid of any trace of the violence that just unfolded. Greg, infuriated, leaves, and the girl finds an ominous note that warns her to abandon her dangerous inquiries, casting a haunting shadow over her quest for the truth.
