Mary Gray Mary Astor and Dick Mercer David Newell elope because Mary’s wealthy parents would never approve of the marriage. They arrive in Atlantic City at a modest, no-frills efficiency hotel, where the vibe of their secret romance clashes with the reality of their finances. Dick, who would rather live as a carefree playboy than punch the clock, pushes for a more comfortable home, while Mary yearns for stability. A sharp quarrel erupts over whether Dick should get a job, and in a tense moment Mary tries to call off the arrangement. Dick won’t give up, locking her in the room while he heads out to fetch a minister, setting a brittle mood for what follows.

Red Dugan [Maurice Black] robs a jewelry store and slips into Mary’s room—the very room she has claimed—with a wild mix of bravado and desperation. He hides a stolen necklace inside Mary’s handbag, and before the danger can escalate, he and a policeman fatally shoot each other, leaving a tangled trail of clues behind.

Clara Muldoon [Natalie Moorhead], the chambermaid who tends the room, becomes a pivot in the fallout. When she comes to change the linens, Mary pleads for a hiding place and even slips Clara $300, hoping to buy her discretion. Clara isn’t ready to switch jobs just yet, but she gives Mary the details of a potential new position. After Mary leaves, Clara encounters Dugan in a moment of weakness; the thief mumbles that he “put it in her bag” before dying, and Clara realizes the stolen necklace may now be in the possession of Mary Gray. Sergeant Daly [Paul Hurst] questions Clara and quickly suspects that Dick Mercer might be tied to the night’s trouble, setting the detectives on a new path of grilling and accusation.

Mary then re-enters the world in disguise, arriving as “Sally Fairchild” at the home of wealthy bachelor George Blaine [Lloyd Hughes] to take a servant’s job. Her manner stones through propriety—too polished for a mere servant—and the monogram on her purse (MG) confirms she’s not who she seems. George, sensing something off but unable to turn away, hires her after a police visit for directions disrupts the moment and she faints. A copper-feel surprise: George discovers a pearl necklace in her purse, and the spark between them grows even as Mary’s cover thickens.

Clara, still embedded with the gang, feeds the thieves information and pressure. Barney Black [Francis McDonald], their leader, decides to lay low and wait for the right moment to reclaim the loot, hoping the heat will die down. George’s newspaper tells of Mary Gray’s elopement, with a sharp photo that spurs him to discharge her—yet the pair’s mutual attraction tempts him to change his mind again. Clara circles back, demanding half of the necklace’s proceeds, and Mary offers a ring to appease her. Clara, however, makes her move and steals the necklace from Mary’s purse.

Dick arrives on the scene after paying Clara $500 for information, trailed by Sergeant Daly and the gang. The thieves abduct Mary, and the tension heightens as Daly closes in on Clara, who betrays the gang by exchanging the pearls for leniency. George races to reach Mary, but Barney’s shot to George’s shoulder and the flat-out tire sabotage send the pursuit into high gear. The crooks retreat to their hideout—an ominous fake hospital. As George follows a lead to the garage, a plan to drive him to the same hospital unfolds, but the cruel twist is revealed when the team’s doctor—Dr. Kent [Theodore Lorch]—appears with a pistol, signaling that danger lingers in the supposed safety of the facility.

In a pivotal confrontation, George realizes the danger and acts quickly. He rescues Mary just as the police arrive, closing the net on the jewel thieves. The case threads its way to a tense, cathartic ending where loyalty, greed, and romance collide in Atlantic City’s shadowy streets, leaving Mary and Dick—and a city ready to judge them—facing the consequences of a night that began with a secret and spiraled into a high-stakes chase.
