Kirsty lives with her widowed mother, Mairi, and sister, Annie, in the small town of Garenin. Their life is marked by the simplicity of small-town living, but tensions rise as Kirsty dreams of a future in America with her boyfriend, Murdo.

Murdo and other young men in the village receive their call to serve in The Great War. This news shatters Kirsty's hopes of emigrating to America as she feels lost without him and uncertain about their future.

That same night, Kirsty is brutally attacked by an unknown assailant. The traumatic event changes her life forever and casts a shadow over the cèilidh festivities.

Village doctor Maclean conducts an examination of Kirsty after the assault. He determines the severity of the trauma she has experienced, marking the beginning of her struggle with the aftermath of the event.

As time passes, Kirsty learns that she is pregnant. This revelation forces her into a deeper internal conflict, as she grapples with her traumatic experience and the loss of her dreams.

Eventually, Kirsty confides in her sister and mother about her pregnancy after receiving the devastating news of Murdo's death. This moment exposes the rift between her hopes and the harsh realities of her life.
