Rudy Baylor, portrayed by Matt Damon, emerges from the University of Memphis Law School with high hopes but faces a harsh reality. Unlike most of his peers, who effortlessly land lucrative positions through family connections, Rudy finds himself struggling to secure even part-time work while he serves drinks at a local bar in Memphis. The legal landscape is saturated with attorneys, leaving him at a crossroads with limited options.

In a moment of desperation, Rudy reluctantly attends an interview with the merciless yet accomplished personal injury lawyer, J. Lyman “Bruiser” Stone, played by Mickey Rourke. To his surprise, Bruiser offers him a position as an associate, though this comes with the onerous requirement of becoming a relentless “ambulance chaser,” scouring local hospitals for prospective clients. Rudy’s compensation amounts to a mere $1,000 a month, while Bruiser’s firm retains an astounding 33% from any settlements or awards. The odds seem stacked against him, yet he presses on.

As Rudy delves deeper into this gritty market, he encounters the cunning Deck Shifflet, a former insurance assessor turned paralegal, portrayed by Danny DeVito. Despite failing the bar exam multiple times, Deck possesses an uncanny knack for gathering intelligence on insurance cases, and soon, he becomes an invaluable partner for Rudy. As Rudy prepares for his own bar exam, their bond forms against the backdrop of a cutthroat legal world.
