Pyross and Hydross are two opposing civilizations in the movie. Pyross lives in a desert stone city known as the Land of Fire, where fire and heat are the natural elements. Hydross inhabits the Land of Water, where rain dominates and water dragons roam. The two peoples have been enemies for centuries and know very little about each other.

The ancient conflict between these peoples dates back to the Great Sundering that split the world into two climates.

The Great Sundering is a cataclysmic event that divided the world into two separate climates. Before this event, the world was unified, but after it split into the Pyross desert territory and the Hydross water territories. This event created the cyclical nature of the world where Pyross thrive in heat but are vulnerable to rain, while Hydross thrive in rain but turn to stone statues during summer.

The climate cycle defines everything in this world. During the rainy season, Pyross must retreat to their stone city to shelter from lethal rain and dangerous water dragons. In summer, Hydross become vulnerable stone statues while Pyross expand their territory and can damage Hydross statues. This seasonal vulnerability shapes the fragile balance of power between the two peoples.

The entire conflict between Pyross and Hydross is driven by these alternating seasons of advantage and weakness.

Sunstones are a precious resource that powers both currency and energy in this world. They anchor wealth and political power, and are central to the ability to wage conflict. The control and ownership of sunstones drives much of the tension between Pyross and Hydross, with the story suggesting that cooperation could unlock benefits for both peoples rather than exploitation.

The central theme explores how centuries of division have created deep mistrust and ritualized conflict between Pyross and Hydross. The unlikely friendship between Skan and Kallisto challenges this inherited enmity, questioning whether peace can exist without mutual understanding. The story argues that peace requires effort from both sides and a willingness to redefine identity beyond traditional hatred.

Skan is a Pyross youth who starts as a guarded survivor closed off to the Hydross world. After meeting Kallisto, he undergoes significant growth, opening his heart and mind to new possibilities. Kallisto is a Hydross youth who defies the strict segregation between her people and the Pyross. She is characterized by curiosity, resilience, and compassion, navigating a society where contact with Pyross is forbidden and dangerous. Her bond with Skan becomes a symbol of hope that coexistence might be possible despite generations of conflict.

The enemies status stems from centuries of division following the Great Sundering. The two civilizations developed in completely opposite climates with opposing vulnerabilities, leading to fear and misunderstanding. They cannot safely touch each other without harm, and seasonal conflicts have hardened into ritualized warfare. This deep-rooted mistrust has been passed down through generations, making peace seem impossible until the main characters challenge the status quo.
