1945 finds Fukuoka unusually calm despite war‑torn Japan. School stays open as boys stage mock battles; Daichi and his friend lead rival squads. Evacuated from Tokyo, Yoriko arrives, haunted by the loss of loved ones in the bombings and taking life seriously. The children bond, unaware that June 19 will split their world into before and after.
