Set in Seville, Andalusia in 1519, Juan Sebastián Elcano Kandido Uranga is a young, restless man who dreams of captaining his own small boat, but a web of debts to the city bank lands him in trouble, with guards poised to arrest him for defaulting.
To avoid prison, he signs on with a bold expedition of five ships led by the renowned Portuguese explorer Ferdinand de Magallanes Iñaki Beraetxe, nicknamed “The Navigator,” a perilous quest to reach the Moluccas Islands and secure spices that are incredibly valuable to the Kingdom of Castile. The voyage is thick with political intrigue, as Álvaro da Costa Kandido Uranga, the Portuguese ambassador, schemes to derail the mission and hires Yago Xavier Alkiza as a spy and saboteur to intercept the journey’s success.
Magellan, undeterred, assembles a capable crew and sets sail with the ships Trinidad, the San Antonio, the Concepción, the Santiago, and the Victoria. Elcano finds himself serving as a helmsman under Captain Juan de Cartagena Mañu Elizondo, a man who despises him and views Magellan as a possible traitor to Portugal, ever wary of hidden loyalties. As the conspiracies unfold, Yago’s covert actions intertwine with Cartagena’s plotting to seize Magellan’s secret maps, adding constant tension and danger to every mile of the voyage.
