As a brilliant and audacious nineteen-year-old, Charles is on the brink of a stimulating intellectual journey at Oxford University. His latest obsession is Rachel, an exquisite American beauty portrayed by Ione Skye, who immediately piques his interest. Although Rachel exhibits initial hesitance, Charles gradually fosters a deep connection with her, albeit his fixation intensifies.

Unbeknownst to Charles, Rachel’s existence is already intertwined with the controlling DeForest, played by James Spader, who subjects her to emotional manipulation and distress. Fate plays a hand when their paths cross once again in a museum, where they share a day filled with nostalgia and bittersweet memories, marked by a tender kiss on the cheek for a farewell. As he reflects through a voiceover, Charles struggles to remember William Blake’s poignant words about love’s eternity, which he had yearned to express to Rachel, lamenting his failure to articulate such profound sentiments.
