As a brilliant and audacious nineteen-year-old, Charles is on the brink of a stimulating intellectual journey at Oxford University. With an exceptional talent for methodical seduction, he has developed a detailed approach to charm his desired partners, carefully recording each step in computer files and formulating elaborate strategies to capture their hearts. His latest obsession is Rachel, an exquisite American beauty portrayed by Ione Skye, who immediately piques his interest. Although Rachel exhibits initial hesitance, Charles gradually fosters a deep connection with her, albeit his fixation intensifies.
Unbeknownst to Charles, Rachel’s existence is already intertwined with the controlling DeForest, played by James Spader, who subjects her to emotional manipulation and distress. Alongside him are his supportive sister Jenny, portrayed by Lesley Sharp, and her quirky husband Norman, played by Jonathan Pryce, who bolster Charles throughout this tumultuous period. His friend Geoff, played by Jared Harris, emerges as a trustworthy guide as Charles gets more involved in Rachel’s life. As his romance blooms, he impresses his father Gordon, played by Bill Paterson, gaining his approval with this newfound relationship. However, as the couple’s love story evolves, Charles comes to the unsettling realization that even Rachel is not without her flaws—just like the numerous women he had previously seduced.
Eventually, Charles grows disenchanted with Rachel’s complexities and reconnects with an old love, Gloria, who is depicted by Claire Skinner, closing the chapter on his relationship with Rachel. She departs for New York, leaving Charles to embark on his studies at Oxford, but her absence looms heavily over him. Fate plays a hand when their paths cross once again in a museum, where they share a day filled with nostalgia and bittersweet memories, marked by a tender kiss on the cheek for a farewell. As he reflects through a voiceover, Charles struggles to remember William Blake’s poignant words about love’s eternity, which he had yearned to express to Rachel, lamenting his failure to articulate such profound sentiments.
