The Phantom of Crestwood

Jenny Wren gathers her four wealthy former lovers—Priam Andes, William Jones, Eddie Mack, and Herbert Walcott—plus Walcott's wife and Jones' fiancée for a weekend at Andes' California coast ranch. The plan hints at retirement to Europe, but she uses the gathering to leverage money from each man. She also reveals that her sister Esther is engaged to Frank, tying the family to the weekend.

After dinner, Jenny makes a dramatic entrance that stuns the guests. Andes introduces a Mr. Vayne, and the mood shifts as old loyalties and resentments surface.

Jenny announces she will take money from each man according to his means: Jones $50,000; Andes $100,000; Mack $25,000; Walcott $250,000. The line between romance and exploitation blurs as the men realize they're being gambled with.

Carter interrupts to present a small box delivered to Jenny's apartment. Inside is a fraternity pin that unsettles her, hinting at a past connection and foreshadowing the night to come.

Three weeks earlier, in the Adirondack Mountains, a young scion from a wealthy family gives Jenny his fraternity pin and cautions that he will gain nothing from his father if they marry before 25.

She takes back the pin and warns him to stay away from hungry Mama bears; he says goodbye and steps off a cliff.

Back in the Adirondacks, Walcott jokes the pin came from the grave; Jenny throws the pin into the storm and glimpses the boy's face gleaming in the trees.

At 3 a.m., Farnsbarns prowls downstairs; Jenny screams and staggers from her room, a dart in her neck. He drags her to the sofa and leaves, but a landslide blocks the road, trapping the house.

Faith phones Crestwood police but is stopped by Farnsbarns, who reveals himself as Gary Curtis, a private detective. He has teamed with Pete Harris to retrieve a client's love letters to Jenny and begins his own investigation.

Curtis and Frank locate Esther unconscious in Jenny's room; she recalls talking to Faith and going to Jenny, and she was clubbed with a candlestick.

Curtis interrogates suspects; Vayne confesses that his real name is Henry T. Herrick. The lights go out, a white-faced figure appears, and Herrick dies of a heart attack.

The lights go out again and Esther is stabbed with a dart, though the blow misses her neck. By 5 a.m., she is asleep, locked in her room with Faith keeping watch.

Carter has disappeared; Curtis and Harris locate a tunnel door at the cliff. Inside, they find Carter's body and the death mask, and Curtis realizes Faith used the tunnel to move Esther toward danger at the cliff edge.

Curtis confronts Faith at the cliff edge, mimicking the dart throw. He knocks a stone over the edge, and Faith follows as a plane circles overhead, signaling police involvement.

Esther and Frank cling to each other while Curtis and Harris walk away from the scene, leaving the investigation to the authorities as the plane looms overhead.
