Benjamin Martin, a widower and seasoned veteran, dedicates his life to raising his seven children on their South Carolina farm. Despite facing challenges in carpentry, particularly in making rocking chairs, he manages his land with the help of free servants.

Gabriel, Benjamin's eldest son, becomes increasingly intrigued by the Revolutionary War. Despite his father's warnings against engaging in warfare, Gabriel, with Colonel Harry Burwell's support, enlists in the Continental army, driven by a strong sense of duty.

Over the next two years, Gabriel writes letters home detailing the brutal realities of war. His letters evoke concern and longing within the family, as his younger brother Thomas expresses a strong desire to join the conflict, despite Benjamin forbidding it.
