On April 14, 2013, Sergeant Tommy Saunders of the Boston Police Department finds himself on a suspension that will soon lead him to a significant role during the Boston Marathon, held on Patriot’s Day. Although he aims to demonstrate his worthiness for reinstatement, he’ll have to navigate through the chaos that is about to unfold.

The night before the marathon, life in Boston continues as usual. Officer Sean Collier, who is in a romantic relationship with Li (played by Lana Condor), an MIT student engrossed in developing autonomous robots, enjoys a peaceful evening. Meanwhile, Tommy’s wife, Carol—a dedicated nurse—worries for her husband as the marathon approaches. Dzhokhar and Tamerlan Tsarnaev are preparing for a dreadful day ahead.

When April 15 dawns, the marathon kicks off at 10 AM from Hopkinton, and Tommy is stationed at the finish line, adorned with a knee brace and accompanied by Boston Police Superintendent William Evans and other dignitaries. As the crowd cheers, two heinous bombs are detonated near the finish line, leading to mass panic and injury. They were hidden in backpacks, ready to wreak havoc just as the runners crossed the finish line.

Among the casualties, a young couple, Patrick Downes and Jessica Kensky find their lives irrevocably changed when they succumb to severe injuries that result in amputation. Steve Woolfenden, a family man, is thrown into despair as he loses his son, Leo, amid the chaos. Fortunately, Leo is rescued by police during the frantic moments that follow the explosions.

In the aftermath, FBI agent Richard DesLauriers collaborates with Commissioner Ed Davis and Sergeant Jeffrey Pugliese to piece together the harrowing events. Tommy, meanwhile, jumps into action, assisting the injured and desperately searching for evidence amidst the wreckage. As rescue operations unfold, he clears the area for ambulances, ensuring the critically injured are expeditiously transported to hospitals.

DesLauriers is torn about labeling the incident a terrorist attack due to its implications on national security and the economy. However, as evidence emerges—metal shards and nails at the blast site—the gravity of the situation becomes undeniable. A command center is quickly established to handle the investigation, with Tommy heading to local hospitals to speak with the victims, seeking any details that could lead to the bombers.

The investigation takes a turn when FBI analysts review the footage and identify a suspicious figure. It becomes a frantic pursuit as they work diligently to track down the Tsarnaev brothers using various cameras around the area. They successfully capture images of Dzhokhar and Tamerlan, but DesLauriers hesitates to share their faces with the public. However, with public pressure mounting, Tommy insists that the city wants to help, arguing for the release of their photos.

Moments later, the brothers’ identities are leaked, impacting the investigation and triggering door-to-door searches by local police. Although Dzhokhar’s friends recognize him from the pictures, they choose to remain silent, even after discovering bomb-making materials while rummaging through his belongings.

As tensions rise, Dzhokhar and Tamerlan resort to violence, murdering Officer Sean Collier in an ill-fated attempt to procure a firearm before carjacking Dun Meng, a student who unwittingly becomes part of their plot for further destruction. Dzhokhar’s attempt to lay low unravels when Meng escapes and alerts the authorities, providing crucial information that helps Tommy and the police to locate the brothers, leading to a chaotic shootout.

During this chaotic exchange, Tamerlan is mortally wounded while trying to flee, leaving Dzhokhar to escape. Meanwhile, Katherine Russell, Tamerlan’s wife, and Dzhokhar’s friends, remain uncooperative during police interrogations, despite evidence suggesting their knowledge of the brothers’ plans.

Then a local man, David Henneberry, discovers Dzhokhar hiding in his boat. After a tense standoff, law enforcement quickly apprehends him, leading to a moment of relief for Tommy and his colleagues, who had risked everything during the frantic pursuit for peace and safety in Boston.

In a show of solidarity, the Boston Police are honored at a Red Sox game, where David Ortiz expresses gratitude for their bravery, reminding them to “stay strong.” Dzhokhar is eventually convicted on thirty counts and sentenced to death, while his network faces repercussions for their part in the troubling events. In the end, the city of Boston emerges stronger, united in resilience against the horror they endured.
