Dean Corso, a seasoned rare book dealer, is hired by the wealthy collector Boris Balkan. His task is to validate the authenticity of one of the three existing copies of *The Nine Gates of the Kingdom of Shadows*, a notorious book said to have been crafted in collaboration with the Devil.

As Corso begins his quest, he encounters a captivating figure known only as The Girl. Their interactions hint at her mysterious motivations and the dangers that lie ahead, setting the stage for a thrilling journey filled with deceit.

Corso meets Liana Telfer, the alluring widow of the late Andrew Telfer, who previously sold a copy of *The Nine Gates* to Balkan. Their encounter escalates into a tense exchange as Liana attempts to convince Corso to part with the book, resulting in a violent confrontation.

The next morning, Corso makes a chilling discovery at the bookstore where he left the precious tome. The bookseller has been hanged in a disturbing reenactment of an engraving from *The Nine Gates*, deepening the mystery and danger surrounding the book.

Corso travels to Toledo, Spain, to consult the Ceniza Brothers, who are known for their expertise in book restoration. They reveal a shocking detail about the engravings in *The Nine Gates*, indicating that some may not be what they seem.

Corso’s quest leads him to Lisbon, where he meets Victor Fargas, the owner of another copy of the book. There, he discovers troubling discrepancies in the engravings that could tie directly to his perilous journey and Balkan's intentions.

The Girl and Corso visit the grave of Victor Fargas, only to stumble upon his charred remains next to a burned copy of *The Nine Gates*. This grim discovery intensifies the ominous atmosphere surrounding their investigation.

In Paris, Corso seeks out Baroness Kessler, who possesses another prized edition of the book. As she declines his request for access due to her suspicions, she inadvertently places her life in danger, leading to a shocking and fatal attack.

Corso discovers a secretive cult conducting a dark ritual involving Balkan's copy of the book. As the ceremony unfolds, Balkan himself intervenes to reclaim his book, resulting in a deadly confrontation with The Girl caught in the crossfire.

In a terrifying climax, Balkan attempts to summon hell using the engravings but instead finds himself engulfed in flames. Corso watches in horror as Balkan's quest for power leads to his self-immolation, marking the chaotic resolution of their conflict.

Amid the chaos, Corso manages to escape from the castle and retrieves the engravings that could hold the key to the mystery. His victory is bittersweet as he contemplates the high price of knowledge and power.

Before leaving the now-empty shop, a dusty paper reveals an authentic engraving depicting a woman resembling The Girl on a dragon-like beast. This striking image connects back to the castle, suggesting the deeper, intertwining fates of Corso and The Girl.
