The Miracle of Bern

Richard Lubanski, Peter Lohmeyer, a coal miner from Essen, returns after eleven years as a Soviet prisoner of war in Siberia. In his absence, his wife Ingrid Lubanski Birthe Wolter runs a small bar, their elder son Bruno Lubanski Mirko Lang has embraced Communism and challenges his father’s memories of the Nazi era, and their daughter flirts with British soldiers who were once his enemies, while Matthias Lubanski Louis Klamroth, an 11-year-old who never knew his father, idolizes the local football hero Helmut Rahn, Sascha Göpel, of Rot-Weiß Essen.

When Richard is unexpectedly repatriated in 1954, reintegration proves difficult as he tries to readjust to a family and country changing by the year. He begins stern about Matthias’s love for football, but gradually softens, and the two share a road trip to Bern the night before the final game to witness history in the making.

A second thread follows Helmut Rahn’s personal triumph, with Matthias becoming a kind of lucky mascot for the star.
