The Miracle of the Bells

Hollywood press agent Bill Dunnigan arrives by train carrying the body of Olga Treskovna to her hometown of Coaltown, honoring her deathbed wish to be buried there. He has loved Olga from afar, though he never confessed his feelings. He faces hostility from the local funeral director who resents that Olga never finished paying for her father's burial. The burial plan centers on Olga being laid to rest in Coaltown's graveyard atop a hill.

The funeral director pressures Dunnigan, and the pastor from St. Leo's Catholic church, to move Olga's burial elsewhere. Dunnigan seeks Olga's wishes and instead approaches Father Paul of the smaller St. Michael's church. He contends with the town's pride and the reality of Olga's deathbed request.

The main flashback reveals Olga being plucked from a nightclub chorus line to serve as a stand-in for a temperamental film actress. Dunnigan immediately sees in her the makings of a true performer. He senses she could become more than a background talent.
