The Master of Ballantrae

The action starts in 1745, when Bonnie Prince Charlie lands in Scotland and the Jacobite uprising breaks out. James, the Master of Ballantrae, decides to join the rebellion despite his father’s warnings. This decision pits the Ballantrae family against itself and sets the stage for upheaval.

To safeguard the family's future no matter who wins, one twin must join the Jacobites while the other stays loyal to the government. James wins the right to join the losing side after a coin toss, a choice that seals his fate and fuels ongoing rivalry with his brother. The split loyalty tests the brothers and shapes their destinies.

The Jacobites are defeated at the Battle of Culloden, and James is reported dead. In truth he survives the battle and flees to England, where his charm and wit help him stay one step ahead of pursuit. The family is left to cope with the aftermath and the belief that James is lost to them.

James reaches the English coast and teams up with fellow survivor Francis Burke. Their fortunes take a sharp turn when pirates capture them, but James uses his charm to seize leadership and becomes co-leader of the pirate crew alongside Captain Teach.

Back home, Henry is held in contempt by tenants and by Alison Graeme, who believes he should have joined the Jacobites. To secure the family estate, Alison agrees to marry Henry in a marriage of convenience while James is presumed dead. Alison still loves James, complicating the arrangement.

James and Burke leave the pirate ship and travel first to North America, where they begin new schemes and navigate unfamiliar shores. The duo uses cunning and charm to build power far from home. Their adventures mark a dramatic shift from their Scottish roots.

After North America, the pair head to Paris to ply their talents in new settings. They chase opportunities and money in high society and murky circles alike, widening their influence. The journey continues as they move onward toward the distant reaches of India.
