On the Durrisdeer estate in Scotland in 1745, Jamie Durie, his younger brother Henry Durie, and their father Lord Durrisdeer receive news of the Jacobite rising. Their loyal retainer, MacKellar, proposes a cunning plan: split the family loyalties so that whichever side wins, the estate and name will endure. Both brothers are eager to fight, and Jamie insists on letting fate decide with a coin toss, a choice that wins him the chance to decide their fortunes—despite the protests of his fiancée, Lady Alison.
The rebellion fails at the Battle of Culloden, and Jamie, evading British soldiers, finds an unlikely ally in the Irish adventurer Colonel Francis Burke. Together they slip back toward Durrisdeer to gather funds for a perilous voyage to France, hoping to secure a fresh start away from the wreckage of the rising.
Trouble follows when Jamie’s commoner mistress, Jessie Brown, catches him in a kiss with Lady Alison and betrays him to the English authorities. A British Major, Clarendon, shoots Jamie, who plunges into the sea. With Jamie presumed dead, Henry Durie becomes the heir to the estate, fueling a slow-burning tension between brothers and a sense of unfinished business among those who remain loyal to the crown.
Wounded but resolved, Jamie and Burke escape their captors and take passage with smugglers toward the West Indies, only to be betrayed by their ship’s captain, Captain McCauley, and seized by pirates led by the flamboyant French captain, Captain Arnaud. Jamie moves from prisoner to partner under Arnaud, and together they set sail for Tortugas Bay, where a glittering Spanish galleon falls into their sights as a prize in the risky crossfire of buccaneers.
Arnaud agrees to Jamie’s daring plan to seize that galleon, but treachery soon boils to the surface: Arnaud betrays Jamie, and the Frenchman is slain in a sharp sword duel that leaves Jamie in command. The pair push onward, steering a course back toward Scotland with a treasure-laden hull and a renewed resolve to reclaim what was lost.
Jamie returns home to a celebratory mood around Henry’s betrothal to Alison, but the homecoming quickly erupts into a confrontation. A violent clash breaks out as Jamie challenges his brother, with Burke standing in the shadows as fate ties together family loyalty, debt, and pride. The odds stack against Jamie and Burke, and they are condemned to die, their fates sealed by the very code they sought to preserve.
In a final act of defiance and mercy, Jessie helps them escape, paying the ultimate price with her life. Henry lends a hand once more, and Jamie reveals the location of treasure that could settle his gambling debts and secure the family’s future. Alison, choosing a path with Jamie’s uncertain promise, decides to leave behind the expectations of the estate. As the danger behind them fades, Alison rides off with Burke and Jamie, stepping into an uncertain but hopeful future together, their destinies bound by loyalty, love, and the lure of fortune.
