Half Brother (2018) – Full Plot Summary & Ending Explained

Read the complete plot breakdown of Half Brother (2018), including all key story events, major twists, and the ending explained in detail. Discover what really happened—and what it all means.

Renato, a corporate figure working for an aviation company in San Miguel, receives a urgent call from Katherine: his father Flavio is seriously ill and wants to see him. He arrives in Chicago with mixed emotions, carrying resentment for Flavio’s absence after immigrating to the United States twenty-five years earlier. There, in a tense moment, he meets Asher and soon learns that Flavio was his half-brother. Before Flavio passes away, he entrusts Renato and Asher with a mission: deliver an envelope to a man named Evaristo, which is meant to point them toward a clue about someone called Eloise. Renato, feeling overwhelmed, lashes out at Flavio in the hospital, storms out, and later, after attending Flavio’s wake, reluctantly agrees to finish the task.

Asher releases a reckless impulse of his own by stealing a small goat, which he names “Renatito,” from a nearby ranch, drawing Renato’s anger into sharper focus. The brothers then journey to an old factory in St. Louis that once produced radio-controlled airplanes—hence connecting to memories they share of Flavio. A factory employee guides them to a nearby Mexican bar, where they encounter Evaristo, a longtime friend of Flavio who also emigrated to the United States. Evaristo provides them with a key and reveals the backstory: Flavio began as a laborer in the local factory but managed to revive it into a thriving RC airplane workshop with the help of his business partner, Katherine. A professional partnership that later deepened into a one-night affair leaves Flavio with guilt over the past. Evaristo then hands Renato a box containing another envelope addressed to a “Mr. B,” along with a claim ticket for a pawnshop; the clue leads them to Oklahoma City.

At Mr. B’s place, they receive Flavio’s wedding ring and a critical explanation: Renato had been mugged while en route to the border, forcing him to pawn the ring for money to continue his journey. His troubles worsen when border guards arrest him, preventing a clean return. Mr. B then gives them an envelope for Eloise, which includes a photograph of St. Mary’s Convent in El Paso, Texas. Renato’s temper flares; he wants to abandon the mission and go home, yet a missing passport keeps him tied to the road, pushing him deeper into the search.

With fuel running low, the brothers press on toward El Paso and stumble upon an unlocked cabin stocked with ethanol. Renato contemplates transforming the alcohol into gasoline, and in a tense moment, discovers that Asher was the one who stole the passports to stop him from leaving. Renato locks Asher in the bathroom and tries to press on, but border guards arrest him again when he attempts a second escape.

A night spent behind bars among undocumented travelers becomes a turning point. Asher bails Renato out and reveals the cabin had belonged to rough locals they had previously run into, who had captured Renatito. The brothers break into the cabin, fill the space with ethanol vapor, and incapacitate the rednecks, rescuing Renatito in the process.

As they near the U.S.–Mexico border, Renato decides to seek the final clue at St. Mary’s Convent. A nun guides them to a cabinet that requires a code—revealed to be the name Eloise from the original envelope. Inside, they discover a DVD from Flavio that details his care by the convent’s nuns after being abandoned, and why he had faced obstacles crossing the border. Flavio also explains that he learned Katherine had given birth to Asher; unwilling to lose another son, he returned to Chicago and called his wife to say he wouldn’t come home. Renato’s anger softens as Flavio explains the complexities of love—how he cherished both Renato and Asher, initially seeing Asher as a substitute for Renato and growing distant when he realized Asher was different. Yet Flavio makes it clear that his love for both sons was genuine, and he hopes they can forgive him and grow as brothers.

The nun reveals that Eloise is not a person but a full-size plane Flavio built for his sons. With this revelation, a path opens to return to Mexico. Renato invites Asher and Renatito to attend his upcoming wedding, and the trio flies away together over the Sumidero Canyon—the very place where Renato and Flavio once dreamed of soaring. The scene culminates in Renato’s wedding to Pamela, where a touching moment unfolds as Emilio—Renato’s child with a toy plane—takes to the sky, pilot’s instincts interrupted only by a sudden crash into a nearby house that scatters the witnesses and underscores the film’s ongoing undercurrent: the fragile, unpredictable nature of family, forgiveness, and the bonds that keep us moving forward. The brothers’ journey—filled with past grievances, hard truth, and a salvaged dream—ends with a renewed sense of kinship and the possibility of a shared future.
