George falls in love with Princess Helene, but Lodac kidnaps her and brazenly informs her father that he intends to feed her to his dragon in seven days. To divert George from reckless pursuit, Sybil unveils a magic sword, a magical steed, an invulnerable armor, and six magically frozen knights that he would command when he turns twenty-one. The impatient George cleverly tricks her and leaves with the enchanted gear, along with the revived knights. This departure marks the start of his expedition.

George and his companions appear before the king, insisting on traveling to Lodac's castle to rescue Helene. On the way to Lodac's realm, the party encounters an ogre that slays Sir Ulrich of Germany and Sir Pedro of Spain. George confronts the creature and defeats it, proving his growing prowess. The loss of two knights deepens the group's resolve and danger.

As Sir Anthony of Italy is at risk in a magic swamp, Branton treacherously kicks George, causing Anthony to dissolve and die. George survives thanks to his magic sword, demonstrating the fragile line between ally and traitor. The swamp tests the party's cohesion and resolve.

Branton meets Lodac in secret and reveals that he possesses Lodac's ring, the artifact that powers the magician. The kidnapping of Helene has been arranged to bolster Branton's reputation in exchange for the prized ring, exposing a treacherous turn in the quest. Trust within the group begins to crumble.

Sir Dennis of France and Sir James of Scotland push ahead to scout the path and are consumed by a heat spiral, dying in the perilous investigation. Branton leads George and Sir Patrick of Ireland into a trap, revealing his alliance with Lodac. They are sealed in a cave with deadly green apparitions, and Patrick's faith enables George to escape at the cost of Patrick's life.
