The Lunch Date

A white woman enters Grand Central Terminal and collides with an African American man standing in the middle of the floor. He offers to help her pick up her belongings, but she protests. The uneasy exchange sets a tense, uneasy tone for what follows.

After sitting down, she realizes she has no cutlery and returns to the service counter to request a fork. The small setback delays her and compounds the day’s tension.

When she looks for a fork, she spots another man, seemingly homeless, sitting and eating a salad. She asserts that the salad is hers, but he ignores her at first and then laughs at her protests, heightening the tension.

She attempts to take the salad away; the man slams his fist on the table and yells, frightening her. She watches him eat and remains unsure how to proceed, staying on edge as the moment grows more surreal.

She hesitates, then grabs her fork and takes a piece of salad. The man does not stop her, and he begins to mimic the way she eats as they continue together until the salad is finished.

After they finish, the man returns with two cups and offers sugar, which she declines. He then reaches into his pocket and pulls out a packet, which she accepts and opens to drop into her drink. She takes a sip and, with a sense of relief or resignation, leaves.

Outside the cafe, she realizes she does not have her bags, which deepens her anxiety. She returns to the cafeteria to search for them, hoping they are nearby. The day’s confusion continues as she tries to make sense of what happened.

She returns to the booth where she sat and finds her bags are not there. The absence heightens her unease as she scans the room for any sign of them.

While pacing, she does not notice that the bags are in the next cubicle. When she finally sees them, she also notices a salad sitting there, realizing the other man never stole her salad but was eating his own.

Realizing the misunderstanding, she laughs loudly, retrieves her bags, and leaves the cafeteria. The strange encounter ends on a comic note as she exits with her belongings back in hand.
