The Loneliest Boy in the World

In 1987, Oliver Martin is shown living alone in his house in the small oceanside town of Hubris, following the tragic loss of his mother, Dolly, a year earlier. He is a socially awkward teenager dealing with trauma and grief, often visited by social workers Margot Seale and Julius Carter who monitor his mental health.

Margot Seale, the social worker, encourages Oliver to step out of his loneliness and start making friends, while Julius Carter remains more cynical about his prospects. Oliver takes her advice, leading him to venture outside and meet new people in the town.

Oliver befriends Chloe, a girl his age who has just moved to town. During a walk, Chloe asks about his mother, leading Oliver to recall a flashback of Dolly's fatal accident involving an electric shock during a freak pool incident caused by Oliver's tripping over an extension cord that knocked a TV into the pool.

Oliver visits his mother Dolly’s unmarked grave, updating her on the shows they used to watch and his search for friends. During this visit, he overhears the funeral of Mitch, a boy killed in the plane crash, and learns he was well-liked by everyone.

Inspired by his connection with Mitch, Oliver plans to dig up the bodies of Mitch, Susanne, Mel, and Frank—victims of the plane crash—hoping to create a family. He ends up bringing an additional 'family' member, Ninja, the watchdog, after accidentally running her over with his car.

The bodies Oliver buried are mysteriously revived as they behave like a lively family, fully alive and interacting. Oliver is surprised but happy to see Mitch, Susanne, Mel, Frank, and Ninja returning from the dead, creating a bizarre but loving family dynamic.

Oliver and Chloe go on a romantic date to The Chicken Run, where they enjoy stargazing and getting to know each other better. Mitch encourages Oliver to make a good impression, and they share a tender kiss at the end of the evening, marking a milestone in Oliver’s social life.

On Halloween, Oliver’s house is visited by Kurt and his friends dressed as horror villains, who threaten Oliver. The family intervenes, scaring off Kurt, and Oliver later joins a Halloween party at The Chicken Run dressed in costume, where he defends Chloe from Kurt and shares another romantic moment.

Julius sneaks into Oliver’s house with a camera to find evidence of Oliver’s supposed delusions, but the family confronts him. Panicked, Julius flees and is taken away in a straightjacket after causing a commotion, confirming his suspicions about Oliver’s mental state.

Oliver’s bravery during the Halloween events earns him acceptance from the townspeople. Margot, noticing Julius’s illness, offers him a ride. At his mother’s newly marked grave, Oliver expresses his love and misses her, finding closure and a sense of belonging.

A fire at Oliver’s house is caused by Susanne’s accidental leave of the iron, prompting Oliver to flee. His 'family' tells him they love him and will wait for him in the afterlife before disappearing. Oliver is saved by firefighters and comforts Chloe, realizing his family truly exists in his memories and heart.
