Three youths gather in a cornfield to tell each other scary stories, and the frame of the night centers on Mitch Derrick Bishop as he weaves a chilling tale about a boy named Lester Dwervick Tim Young. Lester is a social outcast at Emerald Grove High School, living in a trailer with his often-drinking mother, and he endures constant taunts from classmates. The only person who treats him kindly is Judy Patterson Tiffany Shepis, the sheriff’s daughter, who notices the unfairness and stands up for him in small, quiet moments. Lester also tries to connect with Stephanie Roxanna Bina, showing her a drawing and asking her to partner with him in science and even to prom, though his gesture is met with a mix of scorn and disbelief from the crowd.

At home, Lester’s world remains fragile: his mother’s latest turmoil, the alcohol-fueled chaos, and the sense that there is no safe haven to share his fears. He often escapes into his art, drawing birds as a way to hold onto hope for the future. When he works at The French Bulldog, the familiar torment follows him there, and even Judy’s efforts to protect him are met with blowback from his boss, underscoring the bleak social climate he must navigate. Yet Judy’s quiet courage in these moments leaves a mark on him, and he thanks her with a drawing of a bird of paradise, a small loan of beauty in a life otherwise spent on survival.

Morgan pressures Judy to join a party, while Lester faces escalating cruelty at home. One night, Judy’s presence at the party stokes jealousy in one of Lester’s tormentors, who drunkenly kisses her. Judy’s moment of feeling seen by someone else only heightens the pain when she sees Lester arrive and, overwhelmed by the sight, runs away. That same night, Lester’s bottled rage erupts in a brutal sequence of events: in a violent confrontation with his mother’s latest boyfriend, the man is dragged into the cornfields and killed in a way that makes the body resemble a suicide, left near a looming scarecrow that dominates the field.

From here, the terror amplifies as the scarecrow becomes the instrument of vengeance. The same figure decapitates the drunk boyfriend with a scythe, and soon more victims fall to its relentless, eerie presence in the cornfield. Stephanie reports the murders, but the authorities are skeptical, unsure how to interpret a string of bizarre, gruesome killings threaded through the same rural setting. Farmer Hayley Finds blood on his scarecrow and the corncobs, and a boy’s body is found nearby, intensifying the town’s fear that something evil stalks Emerald Grove. Night after night, the scarecrow claims more lives—two victims in quick succession with sharp, brutal force—before it turns its attention to Lester’s other tormentors, including the teacher, and finally closes in on Lester’s own world.

The carnage continues in the shadows of the town as Lester’s past and the scarecrow’s rage collide. The scarecrow murders the cemetery caretaker with a brutal decapitation and then confronts Judy. In a tense confrontation, Judy and the police manage to set the scarecrow on fire, seemingly destroying the murderous presence. Mitch’s narration posits that this brutal vigilante act has made Lester stronger in some twisted sense, and that the haunting persists beyond the blaze.
