On the northwest frontier of India during the British Raj, Scottish Canadian Lieutenant Alan McGregor [Gary Cooper] oversees the arrival of two replacements to the 41st Bengal Lancers: Lieutenant John Forsythe [Franchot Tone], an experienced cavalryman with a teasing streak, and Lieutenant Donald Stone [Richard Cromwell], the son of the unit’s commander, Colonel Tom Stone [Guy Standing]. Stone eagerly anticipated frontier service and even believed his father had sent for him, but the colonel keeps him at arm’s length and treats him the same as all the other men. This rigid, by-the-book approach fractures the younger Stone, who has not seen his father since boyhood, and soon drives him toward a self-made sense of isolation and disappointment.

The colonel’s insistence on strict military protocol is interpreted by Stone as rejection, a wound that deepens as he realizes the bond he hoped for may not come. Meanwhile, Lieutenant Barrett [Colin Tapley], disguised as a native rebel to spy on Mohammed Khan, uncovers plans for an uprising and a daring interception of a convoy carrying two million rounds of ammunition. Mohammed Khan [Douglass Dumbrille] learns that Colonel Stone is aware of the plot and responds with ruthless resolve. He orders Tania Volkanskaya [Kathleen Burke], a stunning Russian agent, to seduce and kidnap Donald Stone to draw out the father and gain access to the critical information or leverage to seize the ammunition.

Despite the colonel’s stance, McGregor and Forsythe are appalled by the apparent indifference to their comrade’s peril and decide to act. They slip away from the camp at night, donning disguises as native merchants to slip inside Khan’s fortress. Their ruse almost works, but Tania recognizes them, and the two men are captured. The prisoner’s interrogations reveal a brutal side of Khan’s regime, as bamboo shoots are pressed under fingernails and set alight in a bid to extract the hidden timing of the armament move.

Back in the fortress, McGregor and Forsythe endure torture rather than betray their colleagues. Meanwhile the demoralized Donald Stone, provoked by a sense of rejection and duty to his comrades, breaks and gives up crucial details about the convoy’s route, enabling Khan to strike first. With the information secured, the ammunition convoy is dispatched to seize the arms, leaving the 41st to ride to a desperate confrontation.

Colonel Stone leads the charge against Khan’s fortress, and the Bengal Lancers surge into battle. From inside their cell, McGregor and Forsythe watch the overmatched cavalry attempt a bold assault. The prisoners manage to break free, blow up the ammunition tower, and turn the tide of the fight. McGregor fights valiantly at a machine gun, and he dies in the line of duty, his sacrifice marking a somber payoff for the unit’s perseverance. In a final moment of redemption, Donald Stone meets Khan in close combat and kills him with a dagger, rescuing his own honor and contributing to Khan’s downfall.

In recognition of their bravery, Forsythe and Stone are decorated with the Distinguished Service Order for their courage. McGregor is posthumously awarded the Victoria Cross, Great Britain’s highest military honor, and Colonel Stone pins the medal to the saddle cloth of McGregor’s horse in a poignant ceremony that honors the fallen officer’s valor and the brothers-in-arms’ sacrifices. The action resolves with a sense of duty fulfilled, even as personal wounds linger, and it underlines the enduring sense of honor that marks the 41st Bengal Lancers.
