Two Royal Air Force officers, Flt Lt Hallett and F/O Neil Allison, visit a British outpost on the frontier of India. Neil is the younger brother of Army Intelligence Officer Captain Jeffrey Allison, who is undercover in the unaligned princely state of Lhanapur. The British worry that radio broadcasts from Ramin Khan are stirring revolt among the people. With the death of the elderly Maharajah of Lhanapur, Ramin Khan moves to seize the throne as a base for his insurgency.

Disguised as an Indian holy man, the undercover Captain Jeffrey Allison gathers intelligence on the insurgents, while the British send a diplomatic mission to Lhanapur. The mission is ambushed and its members killed, underscoring the danger and the high stakes for British efforts.

Back home, the young man is in love with Joan Lattimore, Jeffrey's fiancée, and his jealousy shadows the looming crisis.

With the diplomatic mission compromised, the undercover captain postpones his wedding so Joan can flee to safety.

Following the ambush, Hallett flies Jeffrey to Lhanapur in his aircraft to meet with the ruler.

Back at the outpost, the insurgent leader captures the undercover captain and mortally wounds the pilot, who returns to inform the British.

With tensions mounting, the insurgent leader’s plan targets a British field force gathered near the Kali caves.

Q1

Why does Captain Jeffrey Allison postpone his wedding?

Jeffrey postpones his wedding to allow Joan Lattimore to flee to safety. After the British diplomatic mission to Lhanapur is ambushed and killed, the danger to everyone close to the operation increases significantly. Recognizing that Joan would be a target due to her connection to him, Jeffrey sends her away to protect her from Ramin Khan's insurgents.

Foreshadowing: Earlier, Neil's jealousy and tension over his love for Joan foreshadows the strain this romantic triangle will face.

Neil Allison is in love with Joan Lattimore, who is his older brother Jeffrey's fiancée. This creates a painful love triangle where Neil's personal feelings conflict with his loyalty to his brother. His jealousy adds emotional tension to the story, especially as he must work alongside Jeffrey while harboring these unreciprocated feelings.

Foreshadowing: Neil's jealousy is established early when he arrives at the outpost with Hallett, suggesting this emotional conflict will complicate the mission.

Q3

Why does Ramin Khan want to seize the throne of Lhanapur?

Ramin Khan wants to seize the throne to use Lhanapur as a base for his insurgency against British rule. With the elderly Maharajah dead, a power vacuum exists that Ramin Khan intends to exploit. By taking control of the princely state, he can consolidate his rebel forces and launch coordinated attacks against British interests in the region.

Foreshadowing: The British worry about Ramin Khan's radio broadcasts inciting revolt from early in the film, showing his ambition before he moves to take the throne.

Q4

Why does the British diplomatic mission to Lhanapur matter?

The diplomatic mission matters because it represents Britain's attempt to resolve the crisis peacefully through negotiation with Lhanapur's ruler. When Ramin Khan's insurgents ambush and kill the entire mission, it demonstrates the severity of the threat and forces the British to abandon diplomacy in favor of direct military action. This event escalates the conflict significantly.

Foreshadowing: The British concern about Ramin Khan's propaganda broadcasts establishes the political tension that leads to the failed mission.

Q5

Why does Captain Jeffrey Allison disguise himself as a holy man?

Jeffrey disguises himself as an Indian holy man to infiltrate Ramin Khan's insurgent circle without raising suspicion. This allows him to gather critical intelligence on the rebel plans and movements while appearing harmless and non-threatening. The disguise is a key intelligence operation to understand the scope of the insurgency before the British take direct action.

Foreshadowing: Jeffrey's undercover role is mentioned when he first arrives in Lhanapur, setting up his dangerous infiltration.

Q8

Why do the British use an aircraft to reach Lhanapur?

The British use an aircraft to fly Captain Jeffrey Allison to Lhanapur because the diplomatic mission has been ambushed and killed, making overland travel too dangerous and slow. With tensions mounting and intelligence urgently needed, the aircraft provides a faster, more secure way to reach the unaligned princely state and meet with the Maharajah directly. This also allows Hallett, an RAF officer, to participate in the mission.

Foreshadowing: The ambush of the diplomatic mission directly necessitates this aerial approach as a safer alternative.

Q9

How do the Allison brothers' roles intersect in the story?

The Allison brothers serve different branches of British military and intelligence. Jeffrey is an Army Intelligence Officer working undercover in Lhanapur, while Neil is an RAF officer who arrives at the outpost with Hallett. Their paths cross when Hallett flies Jeffrey to Lhanapur after the diplomatic mission fails. The brothers must work together despite their personal tensions over Joan, combining military and intelligence efforts to counter Ramin Khan's threat.

Foreshadowing: The setup establishing both brothers' presence in the region early creates the convergence that drives the plot forward.

Q10

Why are Ramin Khan's radio broadcasts significant?

Ramin Khan's radio broadcasts are significant because they serve as propaganda tools to stir revolt among the Indian population against British rule. The British authorities fear these broadcasts will incite rebellion and destabilize the region. This concern drives their urgency to monitor Ramin Khan's activities and eventually justifies their intervention in Lhanapur, making the broadcasts a key element of the political threat.

Foreshadowing: The very first timeline event establishes the British fear of these broadcasts as the initial conflict.
