The Legend of Buddha

Mahamaya dreams of a white elephant visiting her, foretelling a remarkable birth. An astrologer confirms that the couple will have a son who will become a great leader. Mahamaya gives birth to Siddhartha in the garden beneath a tree, and the assembled onlookers whisper of destiny.

Upon seeing the newborn, sage Asita weeps and prophesies Siddhartha will save humankind. He also foresees that Mahamaya will die soon. The moment marks Siddhartha's destined greatness and the sorrow to come.

Suddhodana keeps Siddhartha sheltered within opulence, shielding him from pain and aging. To prepare him for kingship, the king sends the young prince to Vishwamitra for rigorous spiritual and intellectual training. Vishwamitra, recognizing Siddhartha's precocity, bows to him in reverence.

An early display of Siddhartha's mercy occurs when his cousin shoots an arrow at a swan; Siddhartha tends the wounded bird and releases it back to the sky. Asita later declares that the bird belongs to Siddhartha because of this mercy. These moments deepen his compassionate nature.

On a countryside stroll with his father, Siddhartha first savors nature's beauty but then sees prey and hunters, and even the cruelty of the natural world. He becomes unsettled by the suffering and power dynamics he witnesses. The experience plants the seed for his later quest to alleviate suffering.

Suddhodana arranges a festival to find Siddhartha a wife, and the prince selects Yashodhara, daughter of King Suprabuddha, after winning a warrior competition. Their wedding is lavish, and the king advises that talk of death, pain, or sickness should be kept from Siddhartha to preserve his happiness. The couple begins a life of royal privilege together.

That night, Siddhartha dreams of a larger purpose and asks a maid what lies beyond the palace gates. He resolves to visit the outside world, to experience life beyond luxury. Suddhodana orders that Siddhartha only see good in his visit, keeping the weak and elderly at home to preserve happiness.

During the first city visit, Siddhartha sees an old man, a sick person, and a corpse, learning that aging, illness, and death touch everyone. A servant then informs him that his wife has given birth to a son named Rahula. These revelations shake his sheltered worldview and deepen his sense of impermanence.

Rahula is born, and Siddhartha names him as a reminder of worldly ties. He recognizes that family and comfort bind him to the cycle of life, and he resolves to seek a higher purpose. He leaves the palace in the dead of night, stepping into the unknown.

At the gates, Mara tries to tempt him back into attachment, but Siddhartha remains steadfast. Halfway through his journey, he leaves Kanthaka behind and continues as a renunciant. He eventually meets ascetics and begins meditating, teetering between extreme asceticism and indulgence.

After a period of extreme fasting, Sujata offers Siddhartha milk and nourishment, prompting him to re-evaluate his path. He realizes he must maintain a healthy mind and discovers The Middle Path between asceticism and indulgence. This insight lights his way toward enlightenment as he continues his quest.

Mara reappears to block his awakening, but Siddhartha overcomes the temptation and attains enlightenment, revealing the Eightfold Path as the route to Nirvana. The former ascetics who had followed him return, now eager to be his disciples. He is now known as Buddha.

Buddha travels across the land to teach compassion and enlightenment. He stops a king's sacrifice of 100 lambs, urging him to protect all life and to end slaughter in his kingdom. He also encounters a human flesh-eating monster, teaching that harming others does not bring peace of mind.

Buddha returns to his former palace and discovers the bonds to Yashodhara and Rahula are strong, yet he must continue his quest for truth. He shares his insights with Suddhodana, Yashodhara, and Rahula, explaining that his path to truth must continue. He preaches compassion and good deeds, guiding others toward enlightenment.
