Mahamaya has a dream where a white elephant visits her, and she miraculously becomes pregnant. An astrologer tells Suddhodana and Mahamaya that they will have a son who could become a transformative leader capable of guiding humanity. Mahamaya gives birth to the baby boy in the garden beneath a tree, and the astrologer prophesies that the child will rise as a remarkable figure who could save humankind. [Suddhodana] vows to shelter him in luxury, though his ultimate duty may lie beyond mere royal privilege. The boy is named Siddhartha.

Asita bursts into tears upon seeing baby Siddhartha, declaring that he will save humankind, and predicts that Mahamaya will die soon. Mahamaya dies in her sleep, and Siddhartha grows up within a sheltered prince’s life. [Suddhodana] sends Siddhartha to Vishwamitra to prepare him for the day he might one day inherit the throne. When Vishwamitra begins teaching Siddhartha, he is surprised to discover that the young prince already knows how to recite scriptures and is skilled in counting and arithmetic, and he bows to Siddhartha in reverence.

During a playful moment, Siddhartha’s cousin shoots an arrow at a swan, and Siddhartha chooses to nurse the wounded bird back to health and return it to the sky. Asita remarks that the bird belongs to Siddhartha because of his mercy. On a peaceful countryside stroll with his father, Siddhartha is initially entranced by nature’s beauty but soon witnesses the natural cycles of life—predation, injury, and death—that bring him face to face with power and exploitation in the world.

Growing older, Siddhartha remains unsettled by the gap between his luxurious life and the world’s suffering. [Suddhodana] struggles to understand his son’s unending restlessness, and he arranges a festival to find Siddhartha an appropriate wife. Siddhartha chooses Yashodhara, the daughter of King Suprabuddha, to be his wife, and the couple wed in a grand ceremony. [Suddhodana] urges Yashodhara not to speak of death, pain, or sickness to Siddhartha in order to keep him content. At night, Siddhartha experiences strange dreams about a larger destiny, and in the morning he asks a maid what lies beyond the palace gates. He resolves to venture into the city to glimpse life beyond the palace walls for the first time.

During his visit, [Suddhodana] orders that Siddhartha only see what is good in the world; scenes of poverty and frailty are kept out, and the weak are kept indoors for the day. Siddhartha is briefly enchanted by the happiness around him until he encounters an old man, learning that everyone will eventually age, suffer, and die. This revelation shakes him and makes him question the nature of happiness and permanence.

The truth of life becomes more tangible as Siddhartha witnesses illness and death. A baby is born, Rahula, and Siddhartha asks the servant to name him thus, a name that later comes to symbolize ties that might bind him. He chooses to give up his comfortable life for the happiness of others, exiting the palace at night on the ceremonial horse Kanthaka. Midway on his journey, Mara tempts him, but Siddhartha overcomes desire and continues toward renunciation. He leaves Kanthaka behind and seeks guidance among wandering ascetics, eventually meditating under a tree until he nears the edge of life.

A woman named Sujata offers Buddha some milk, and he realizes that a balanced mind—neither extreme asceticism nor indulgence—is necessary to attain enlightenment. The ascetics who had followed him depart, upset that he has chosen a different path. Mara returns to test him, but Siddhartha remains steadfast. He reveals the Eightfold Path as the route to Nirvana, and the disciples who had left return to follow him. Now known as Buddha, he travels across the land to teach enlightenment and compassion.

He halts a king’s brutal sacrifice of lambs, guiding the monarch to protect all living beings. He confronts and transcends threats from a flesh-eating monster by teaching that harming others cannot bring peace of mind. Buddha eventually returns to the palace and recognizes that the bonds to Yashodhara and Rahula are strong, yet he shares his insights with Suddhodana, Yashodhara, and Rahula. He tells Yashodhara that he must continue his quest for truth. Through his teachings on compassion, kindness, and right action, he helps lay the foundations of Buddhism, a new path toward peace and understanding that resonates across generations.
