Old Malla is a mysterious elder who claims she was brought to America 140 years ago as a slave and now seeks a final, fleeting glimpse of youth. She approaches Dr. Paul Talbot, an endocrinologist, with a proposition: reveal the secret of eternal youth if he will bankroll her last journey back to Africa so she can be young and beautiful for one last night before she dies. Paul, however, is not alone in this equation; he is married to June Talbot, an alcoholic who is ten years his senior, and their strained union forms a tense backdrop to the escalating drama.
Together, they travel toward Africa where they witness a hidden ceremony of the Nando tribe that blends ritual and science in a way that unsettles the modern world. The ceremony centers on orchid pollen, but the crucial catalyst is a sacrificial male pineal gland’s secretions, carefully gathered through a specialized ring and then merged with the pollen. The result, though temporary, is dramatic: Malla is transformed back into a young, radiant version of herself, her beauty restored for a night that seems almost too bright to last.
The transformation’s price, however, weighs heavily on June. Feeling used as a talking, living lab, she plots revenge and sees Paul not as a partner but as a tool. In a brutal twist, she engineers Paul’s sacrifice so she can access his pineal secretions and reclaim youth for herself, although Malla warns that the miracle won’t endure. The danger intensifies when the jungle guide Bertram betrays them, secretly stealing the ring and much of the pollen, and then escapes into the jungle with explosive cunning. By dawn, the glamour fades; Malla discovers she has aged once again and retaliates by killing Bertram to obtain his pineal secretions.
Back in America, June returns under a new disguise, posing as her own niece, Terry Hart. The disguise allows her to move through society while siphoning pineal secretions from her male partners, a dangerous game that keeps her youth only as long as the supply lasts. Yet the cycle becomes more perilous when she grows fond of her lawyer, Neil Foster, a man half her actual age. To remove a rival, she kills his fiancée, Sally Howard, draining Sally’s pineal gland for herself. But the experiment goes awry: pineal extracts from a woman exert the opposite effect, accelerating the aging process instead of reversing it.
As the authorities close in on a string of gruesome murders, June’s duplicity collapses under its own weight. She uses the last of Sally’s pineal extract in a desperate bid to stay ageless, but the plan backfires, and before the police can arrest her she throws herself from a bedroom window. The fall is fatal, and when investigators examine the scene, they find her body appears older than ever before, a stark reminder that the quest for eternal youth has a cost that cannot be escaped.
