The Last Mountain

Tom Ballard was born to renowned mountaineer Alison Hargreaves and Jim Ballard, into a family deeply connected to the world of climbing. His heritage would shape his destiny, as from a young age he was surrounded by tales of adventure and the towering peaks of the Himalayas.

In 1995, Alison Hargreaves embarked on a historic solo climb of K2, a feat that would solidify her legacy in the mountaineering community. Tragically, she lost her life on the mountain, an event that forever altered the lives of her family, particularly her children, Tom and Kate.

Following Alison's death, Jim Ballard took his children, Tom and Kate, on an expedition to K2's base camp to honor their mother's memory. This poignant journey was documented in a BBC film titled 'Alison's Last Mountain,' showcasing the family's grief and love for the mountains.

As Tom grew older, he developed a deep passion for climbing, fueled by the legacy of his mother. He adhered to his personal philosophy of 'listening' to the mountain, treating it with respect and awe, and aiming to become one with the natural world during his climbs.

In February 2019, Tom Ballard took on the treacherous Nanga Parbat in the Himalayas alongside Italian climber Daniele Nardi. The duo ventured higher despite others in their group deciding to turn back, demonstrating Tom's determination and ambition as a climber.

As Tom and Daniele pushed onward into dangerous territory, their journey took a tragic turn when they disappeared on the mountain. Their decision to continue was driven by Tom's intrinsic love for climbing, but it ultimately led to their demise on one of the world's deadliest peaks.

After the disappearance of Tom and Daniele, a search operation was initiated, led by Alex Txikon. Despite the intensive efforts, it was a heartbreaking outcome when their bodies were eventually discovered, casting a shadow over the climbing community and their families.

In the wake of Tom's disappearance, his sister Kate and father Jim grappled with profound grief. They reflected on the dual tragedies that had befallen their family, losing both a beloved mother and son to the mountains they held dear.

The documentary features heartfelt interviews with family members and friends, including Stefy, Tom's girlfriend, and Karim Hayat, who opted out of the expedition due to safety concerns.
