The Kill Team

In 2009, Staff Sergeant Deeks takes over Bravo Company’s platoon after Staff Sergeant Wallace is killed by an IED during a village raid. Deeks declares they will pursue those responsible for the deaths of 24 American soldiers, setting a relentless mission tone. Briggman provides Deeks with a dated list of IED attacks to help track the attackers.

The platoon raids a civilian village and captures a wounded man suspected of planting an IED. Briggman refuses Deeks' order to hurt him, choosing to follow rules of engagement and protect the wounded man. The tension between duty and moral restraint marks Briggman’s early conflict.

During the first raid, Briggman hears a gunshot and finds a boy dead on the ground. The platoon claims the boy attacked with a grenade, but Briggman remains skeptical and contacts his father with doubts. Back at base, he begins to document what they did and what happened.

Briggman's father calls the CID to investigate potential murder by Deeks, triggering an internal inquiry. Briggman is summoned with the platoon to a tent, where growing tensions reveal Deeks's protective stance toward his men. The investigation will test loyalties and truth.

In the second raid, Rayburn executes an unarmed man and plants an AK-47 on him to appear as the attacker. Briggman again texts his father detailing the horrors he witnesses. He also goes to Deeks's office to search for a bag of enemy weapons, but Deeks catches him.

Deeks warns Briggman that villagers are 'co-operators' with jihadists and asserts control over the platoon’s actions. The exchange deepens Briggman’s moral crisis as he questions the murder’s necessity. He phones his father in tears, explaining how dangerous the situation has become.

During the third raid, the team ambushes a silent elderly civilian. Deeks orders Rayburn and Briggman to execute him and to stage it as if he attacked with a grenade. Briggman fires the shot for the first time in combat, killing the man. The platoon celebrates, but Briggman is overwhelmed by guilt.

Back at base, the unit's supposed success is overshadowed by guilt as Rayburn is called in for CID questioning. Briggman realizes he might be next, and the weight of what they did begins to crush him. His mental state deteriorates as the investigation looms.

Feeling cornered and overwhelmed, Briggman contemplates suicide inside Deeks’ office, unable to see a way out of the cycle of violence. He ultimately refrains, recognizing the real consequences would extend beyond the battlefield. The moment captures the depth of his trauma.

Briggman and Deeks are interrogated by the CID, with Briggman accompanied by his parents. He is asked to tell everything he knows, marking the start of legal scrutiny that could indict both soldiers. The conversation exposes the brutal reality of their actions and their possible consequences.

The closing credits reveal real-world outcomes: in 2010 five soldiers were charged for civilian killings. Specialist Adam Winfield pleads guilty to involuntary manslaughter and testifies against Gibbs (the film’s Deeks), who receives a life sentence. The film connects battlefield actions to lasting legal repercussions.
