The ending of The Inheritance reveals that Charles Abernathy’s true motive was rooted in a dark deal with a demon named Mammon, which he made to revive his family’s fortunes and influence. To ensure wealth and power returned to the Abernathy name, Charles entered into a pact that required him to sacrifice his own life at 75. He initially intended his children to protect him through the night so that Mammon would claim them instead, thus safeguarding his own existence. However, as the story unfolds and supernatural horrors escalate, it becomes clear that Charles’s plan was a cruel trap—one that involved killing his children to fulfill his part of the pact.

In a shocking turn, Charles confesses that he had planned all along for his children to be killed so that he could survive alone. In the climax, he brutally murders his son Drew and tries to kill Hannah, revealing his willingness to sacrifice his family for eternal life. However, Hannah, who is pregnant with Drew’s child, manages to outsmart him, trapping him under a grandfather clock. As Charles shoots his son and attempts to eliminate Hannah, Mammon itself intervenes, killing Charles by dragging him into the demonic realm.
