During the space flight near Saturn's rings, a radiation blast exposes all three astronauts. While two die immediately, West survives but receives a lethal dose that begins breaking down his cellular structure on a molecular level, causing his flesh to liquefy.

Upon waking and seeing his own melting face and hands, West panics and attacks in horror at his transformation. The nurse tries to restrain him, leading to her death. The shock of his condition drives him to flee into the night.

West stumbles upon the house while wandering and follows his hunger. He kills the husband and attacks the wife, but she defends herself by severing his arm with a cleaver, the first time anyone successfully wounds him significantly.
