The Heart of the Matter

Harry Scobie, Trevor Howard, is the Deputy Commissioner of the Sierra Leone Police in Freetown during World War II. He is unhappily married to Louise, a fellow Catholic, Elizabeth Allan, and together they mourn the loss of their only daughter. After fifteen years of service in the country, Scobie is passed over for a coveted promotion when the Police Commissioner announces his retirement, and a younger man shipped from the United Kingdom takes the job instead. The setback festers into a quiet resentment as Scobie keeps dutifully policing a city perched on the edge of wartime chaos.

On a routine inspection of the neutral Portuguese steamer Esperança, Scobie uncovers an envelope addressed to Germany. He confiscates it, but the ship’s captain pleads with him to do nothing—the letter is meant for his own daughter. Moved by mercy, Scobie burns the document, sparking a small but telling conflict between his rigid sense of duty and a compassionate impulse that quietly unsettles his otherwise orderly world. Helen arrives in Freetown and is housed in a hut near Scobie’s home; a cautious, private relationship blossoms into an affair that unsettles his sense of faith and responsibility. When an argument erupts between them, Scobie writes a letter to Helen expressing his feelings, but the servant of Yusef’s organization intercepts the missive, a reminder of how entangled his life has become with both crime and obligation.

The pressure intensifies when Louise announces her return, and Yusef makes a brutal demand: Scobie must hand over a packet of contraband diamonds to the captain of the Esperança, or the letter to Helen will be handed over to Louise along with the truth of his affair.
